Having save states and the ability to apply translation patches to games is the best thing ever.
I didn't know you could add translation patches!? That might do it for me. I knew it could play Famicom and Super Famicom, but didn't know you could apply translation patches. Do they provide that through their firmware updates or is that something you have to search them out?
Update the firmware to gain the ability to apply patches.

You will have to seek out the patches yourself. (Pssst! Look at the first page of this thread).
Awesome! Many thanks! I'll take a look at the first page.

Does anyone know if the rewriteable SF Memory and GB Memory cartridges work on the Retron5?

Sorry if I've asked before!

I don't have one, but I'm almost positive they won't but you have a chance, read on.

The way the R5 works is that it looks for the CRC check of the game, then compares it to the one in its database, then dumps the game to the system and finally loads it up to play.

Since pirate carts mostly don't have one of those, flash carts never have one either they don't work. Multicarts for non-NES systems usually won't work either, because it will grab the first ROM it sees and that tends to be the boot menu for the other games on there which don't get dumped so it bombs immediately or bombs if you try and load a game from the menu.

I think you may have a sliver of a chance if you have a purely empty flash card where not a single file sits on it, and you put just 1 game on there that has the proper CRC code for it that matches the database, that might work, not on the NES but other stuff should.

The only reason I think this is because I've got one of those unlicensed 300 copies of QWAK! made for the GBA by the original developer and he used a bulk order of gba flash cart kits. He wiped it clean and just put QWAK! on it, put his sticker over the chinese one under it, and shipped it as is and it works 100% right down to saving of high scores.

Yeah, I figured.

Just to be clear I'm talking about the official Nintendo cartridges you could rewrite in Japan, I assume they all work the same.

I'd have liked to play Famicom Detctive Club 2 and Super Famicom Wars in English from a legit cartridge if I could, but it probably won't be happening!

Zny news on the Game Gear adapter? I haven't really heard anything since July, and my Google search reveals nothing...

I want to know more about this as well. I know a place that has a literal bucket full of Gamegear games for sale. If the retron5 gamegear adaptor launches, I will be much more tempted by that.

Yeah I even checked the Hyperkin FB page the other day - no news about Game Gear.

The news that we'd have it by the end of the year was overly optimistic. Hopefully sometime in 2016.

Surprised there hasn't been any firmware updates in quite a while. I wonder if there's just less support for it or if the emulator rights debacle has thrown a wrench into things.

Note sure what new updates would do, honestly. Things seem to be running smoothly now.

Oddly enough 2.0 BETA 5/6 seems to be my thing. I had trouble with certain games on newer firmware, but it's all good.
