I think Gauntlet has some exclusive characters or something, but still.
As I recently found out, the ports of Dark Legacy are all different.

PS2 port came out first, it's just the arcade version with no extra features.

Gamecube port came out a few months later, added an inventory system, allowing you to hang on to items you pick up instead of having to use them right away. There's also some extra power ups not found in the arcade original.

Xbox port came out last, added all the GC exclusive features, and also has the best graphics and no slowdown in larger areas.

So for being #2 in the best port order, I'm still surprised the GC port commands such a ridiculous price these days. Check out the VGPC graph. What was once a pickup less than $25 is easily going for double now in the past year. No denying it's a good game though.

I wonder why the XBox ports of games aren't generally more popular despite them being technically the best?...

Very interesting Exedexes.
I think I read about the port differences once, but had completely forgotten.
But, I think I actually like my more arcade-like PS2 port of Gauntlet: Dark Legacy.
Games where they let you save items, I usually just end up hoarding them and doing without whenever possible. Arcade-y games force me to be more liberal and reckless with powerups  .

Even so, I might have to try out one of the other versions sometime...

Had to bring the Duke into this, didn't ya?

Well, once I think about it, people are probably more likely to pirate the other 2 ports (as there are better options to play them via HDD).
Reconsidering, I doubt the demand for the actual game is as high on Xbox/PS2 as the Gamecube (which I think has more systems with working disc drives anyhow).

Probably also has to do with the idea that most folks don't still have their XBOXes around. And the Wii gives backwards compatibility for GC stuff, which helps keep that a little more relevant.

Had no idea DL sold for that much now. Glad I've got a copy! If the slowdown bothered me, I suppose I could burn a copy of the XBOX version, or if I found it super-cheap, purchase.

That is a very valid point, since you can softmod them so easily. Granted Cube drive replacements and memory card SD loaders are top notch now - just a decade late.

However it looks like my copies of Twin Snakes and Killer 7 are going on the trade block. I had no idea they were that pricey.

Thanks for sharing everyone. For some reason I really like the Gamecube. It's a nice small console so it doesn't take up a lot of room, has a great controller and most importantly a bunch of fun games. From that era it's certainly my favorite console. I still have a PS2 and an Xbox but I have all of 2 games for each of them; Kingdom Hearts and Oddworld games respectively. The only game I regret parting with is Psychonauts.

As for Gauntlet it doesn't make much sense. On any given day there are 3+ auctions ending so I can't really say it's a rare game and it's not an exclusive or Nintendo first party game. As mentioned it isn't really better then the other two versions yet it goes for double or more of the other two. There is a GBA version of this as well.

N64 games jumped but it seems not as much as the NES and SNES and Gamecube jumped shortly thereafter and are still climbing.

My most recent pickups this weekend and yesterday were:
Skies of Arcadia Legends
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Harry Potter: Quidditch Cup
Wave Race: Blue Storm Nintendo Power guide
Total cost was $13 plus trade credit

I do have extra cart and box/art, no instructions, copies of Beach Spikers and Mega Man Network Transmission I'd be willing to trade or sell at a decent price if anyone is looking for them. Both are very fun if you haven't tried them. I have a Sonic Mega Collection instruction book as well if you're missing one of those.
My FS/FT/WTTF list:

Twin Snakes I knew about how pricey that got. I got that here from RB for a *fantastic* price, I'll say that. Local game store is charging around $50 for it.

Good point on Wii-GC compatibility, good reason why most GC games are still valuable.

Great pick-ups! Hulk remains one of my favorite superhero games, although I haven't started Skies yet. Picked it up from a sale in the forums here a while back for a very reasonable price, and am still really looking forward to playing.

---

Sad story about my GameCube - it has been set up in our basement in a convenient nook where I can play undisturbed, but is using a component-to-VGA converter to run on a monitor attached to my old PC. This week the converter gave up the ghost though... meaning I need to migrate my GC gaming to a different location until a replacement comes in.

The good news is that, between removable memory cards and Wii backwards compatibility, the move is incredibly easy. Still a huge disappointment to have my GC setup disturbed though.

---

What GC games are people currently playing, anyway? Gun is next up on my playlist, and I've gone through much of the initial tutorial. Fun so far, and I've heard a lot of positive word-of-mouth about the game. Looking forward to playing further in.

Gun is great, a real surprise. Play all of the side activities for maximum enjoyment/stat boosts.

I'm going through Mega Man X collection, the now-near $50 Dark Legacy, and Smuggler's Run Warzones.

The Gamecube used to be my console of choice for multi-platform games. I think this is because it was my 1st system of that generation (in other words, I chose it over a PS2 or Xbox at the time).
I also viewed it as the most reliable of the 3. I'd hear about PS2 and Xbox drives dying left and right, but GC, almost never.

Nowadays, I am forced to acknowledge that the disc drive will not last on any system. So games available on all 3 systems I tend to lean towards the most convenient to get on a modded system (Xbox for me these days).

Recently, I have been looking into options for dumping my GC collection to a portable hard drivefor use on my Wii, so maybe it won't be an issue for me in the future.
