Don't touch System Shock 2.
Admittedly though Hobie does have an issue. He happens to be one of only a handful of people in the world who have played and didn't care for Deus Ex. That's not to say that his opinion is wrong, but instead I wish to point out that no matter where he airs his opinion, he's going to get a ton of flak over it due to the game's massive popularity and general prestige. It's like Final Fantasy 7, only on a magnified scale(as FF7 in general has more detractors than Deus Ex...at least, that's been my experience).

In short, Hobie disliked the game. He's justified in that, he had valid complaints. But when he mentions these complaints, people generally become hostile immediately, to which he's taken a more hostile view of the series as a response.

And that's perfectly normal. I'm urging Hobie to try the game not because I think it will force him to change his mind or because I'm being hostile to his anti-Deus Ex opinion, but because I'd rather he give it a try and find out first hand if he really does not enjoy it instead of being turned off because of the fan reaction to the first game. Hopefully he can give it an honest try and isnt too far gone on his conclusion based on reviews, gameplay footage, and his aggravation over the fan worship. Maybe once he gets into it, he'll enjoy it. Maybe not. But I'd rather he manage to form an honest opinion, just as I'd like to form one of it. Then we can compare notes and see what we think without hostility.

Actually, didn't like that or Bioshock either. Those are probably the others on the 'list' of games Mr Popo is thinking of. I started SS2 3 or 4 times and didn't get far before it kept turning me off. I started BS 3 times from the beginning. First I made it to the fight in the freezer before stopping. Second I got past the mini sub 'oh crap' moment. Third was just a little past the mini sub moment. I really wanted to like these games too, but there's just something about them really turned me off. BS I made it the furthest because it was a better game, but still something about it that I just didn't enjoy playing them. I would literally be thinking "Oh geez, I suppose I'd better try to make some progress", but didn't want to play. I can't even tell you exactly what it is about BS specifically, just some general lack of fun.

I made copious notes of the things that I tought were terrible as I forced myself to complete DE. I gave it the entire game to redeem itself, but it didn't for me. I had intended to write a review of sorts, even knowing I'd have people screaming at me like they did Tom Chick, but by the time I was done I just didn't want to think about it any more. The various endings which were completely asanine icing on the cake didn't help.

As I said, I gave the first one many chances. I stopped at least 5 separate times in the first level of the first game back in the day since everyone else thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Then after being goaded by Mr Popo with the game on Steam, I played the entire thing. It gave me an honest negative opinion of the game as I witnessed its full terrible scope. I have one local friend who might possibly buy it. If he does I'll give it 5 minutes, however if he buys a console version that will be an extra stroke against it if I'm forced to play it with a pad. :P

Just finished DXHR. Loved the endings, but the game reminded me of MGS2 in several parts (including the endings!).. The characters were mostly scifi cliches but overall a pretty good game.

Does Metroid Prime count as a first-person shooter even though Nintendo claims it is a "first person adventure"? This game is blowing my mind away. I still love Super Metroid more, but I'm surprisingly pleased at how much I am enjoying exploring in this game.

Yeah I don't really consider it to be an FPS, but I don't really argue about it either way. It's pretty much a genre of its own.

I'd consider it an FPS. It's first person, you shoot things, it just happens to be more adventure oriented. I personally consider it one of the best first person games ever made. :)
