Re: The PS3 is the New Saturn
I have one along with a handfull of games and I mostly use it as a DVD/Blu Ray/Media streamer. It does a really good job at those...

Re: The PS3 is the New Saturn
I have both a PS3 and a 360 hooked up for streaming media.
And both do all right. I notice PS3 has issues with different video files far more often the the 360. Though it bugs me that the 360 will only recognize only one UPnP server at a time, where the PS3 will recognize as many as you want and you can select which one to access at call right through the menu. And you don't have to reset the PS3 to update the list.
Though I have to say, the BEST media server I've EVER used was XBMC on the Xbox!!!! Played friendly with everything, supported nearly every video file I threw at it, could even play iso files, and I wasn't required to use a UPnP server.
I'm sorry, but just because UPnP sounds cool and supports databases and all the hunky dory stuff. I don't freaking like it! It's a mess to set up and utilize... yey, great, I can cross transcode on the fly if the media client doesn't support said file format. But I mean come on, the PS3 and the 360 has the damn power in it to play a freakin' xvid file or an Mpeg2 file! It's not like I, or any other user, am hosting thousands of videos to hundreds of simultaneous users on my LOCAL NETWORK!
Come on 99% of PS3 owners barely even know what the hell a router is, if they have a router, or anything about it. Let alone the fact that their idea of their local network is just a 5 port router on their dad's desk. Come on! The regular network protocols should be able to handle it... any main stream OS supports Samba and it's extremely light weight. And the directory tree displayed via Samba makes logical sense when compared to the directory tree schematic EVERY person has used for over a decade. (or any other handle, I only bring up Samba because that's how I keep cross communication in my house together nice and neat no matter if the user is accessing my linux server with Windows, Linux, or Mac)
Why use a freakin' database? Add on more processing power to the server to save what on the client? WHAT!? Nothing, that's right, NOTHING. All it does is add confusion to the user as to the location of the file. Come on, how many times have you heard mom say "what do you mean where is my music? It's in itunes!" No it isn't, that's a database view of the actual physical location of it on your physical device. "Huh, stop talking nerd to me honey. It's in my itunes... I just can't figure out how to get it on my iPod."
/end rant about media hosting
Anyways, is the PS3 like the Saturn? For comparison purpose to this generation... I kind of agree. It may not be exactly the same. But it is the odd man out. It's hard to develop for (maybe not hard as the Saturn... but how do we know? Has anyone here dev'd for both the Saturn and the PS3??? If you have email me!), Sony is kind of riding on their "We're Sony" egotistical attitude... like Sega did in the 90's.
Of course PS3 won't kill Sony. Playstation isn't Sony's soul source of income. But it certainly can bite them in the ass when it comes to the video game world. I have a strong feeling the PS3 is going to really hurt Sony's reputation... and they deserve it. Sony needs to get off their high horse of hot air and realize there is more to gaming then what they say it is.
Microsoft needs to learn that too as well. MS loves to nickel and dime their users like no other! Ugh... fucking assholes.
But back to Sony. Sony and their UMD, not so universal was it Sony!? And their Blu-ray... crash and burn fuckers... CRASH AND BURN! Just wait... those coffee coasters of blu madness will end up where they belong. Off memories in the back of some video-philes porno closet. They'll be pulled out at parties while some prick with deep pockets masturbates his decade old video collection to a bunch of guests who really don't care, but oohs and awwws out of complacency.
"Oh yeah Laserdisc, you like it that way... come on honey... take it deeper."
That's all this generation is... bloat... fucking bloat to drain our pockets. Because EVERYONE needs top end hardware that plays 1080p on their SDTV, pumps 7.1 DD out their tinny stereo pc speakers, hosts videos and music across a media server protocol constructed to host to millions of users but under utilized by dad and his spank collection on a local network of 3 users. WOO HOO!
I know this guy who but an evo 5... he drove it to work and the grocery store... sure enough he got eyes looking his way, but when moths came flying out his pocket, and he never put it over 55 because of rush hour traffic... it kind of lost all its glamour in hind site.
