Don't forget that the GPU my draw more wattage than you are expecting, especially if it requires a 6pin from the psu.

I'd find out what the GPU needs to power. You might end up not having a PSU with the right connectors or the power where it needs it most (AKA twin 12v rails especially when running multi core AND a modern GPU at the same time)

Well I only buy GPUs with passive cooling, so I SHOULD be ok...

I would still try and find out! Just to be on the safe side, it should only take a couple of minutes googling! It's worth researching than having to rebuild your system because your PSU has died and taken the rest of the system with it!

I know some video software such as pinnacle and premiere use the video processor in addition to the cpu. I dont know what software you would be using though..

I don't know if you've already decided on something, but I do have a suggestion. Now is the absolute worst time to buy an AMD processor. For a while, Athlon 64 was rocking the cpu world, but not anymore. Starting with the Core line, Intel cpus have vastly improved. I've got to say I made the same mistake as you when I bought a pc in 2004. I got a P4 when I should've gotten an Athlon.

I'm planning on assembling a new pc in about 6 months. It'll be built around the soon to be released Nehalem processor (should be November I believe). A massive step up over the current Core 2 duos. Something like 20% I hear. They are also a hell of a lot more efficient, quieter, and the cores turn themselves off when not being used. Of course this shit isn't out yet and I don't know the price when it does come out, but I'm really thinking that the new socket (lga1360? I don't remember the number) is going to be the standard for a few years.

Is there a timeline on these? And I'm guessing since they'll be new, they will be well over $100 for a chip...

I don't really do much actual editing.
I just have some open-source scripts/converters to do the dirty work for me...

Well the first i7 chips are going to be enthusiast. They're supposed to be replacing the Extreme line of chips. Which are well over £300 for the bottom line extreme chips.

I'd say you are looking at about $400-500 dollars if you are lucky. The i7 won't be mainstream for at least another 6 months after it's launch next month. The motherboards won't be cheap either.

In other words. i7 isn't ready for mainstream users yet. It's far too expensive. So the price/performance chips are still the Core 2 quad q6600 or the Core 2 Duo e6500.

I've got a q6600 3.6 on water and haven't had any problems for awhile now... I would recommend it. You should be able to get it past 3 ghz with aftermarket air for sure..... and they're cheap!
