street fighter 2 on snes at my neighbor's house, the first one where you can't play the boss'.
in 3d? Tekken 3, i bought it because i got it for $10 new when I bought my ps1(shortly after dreamcast launch) and i wanted a fighter.. Thanks to my friends constantly trying to beat my ass in it, and the ending cut scenes as a goal, i fell in love with it.

well it depends. my first fighter beat em up was Double Dragon
the fighting game that got me back into them was Tekken 2. i always hated mortal combat, so i have never really gotten into 2d fighters.

Battle Arena Toshinden Remix for the Saturn. Even though i was only 7 i was convinced no game could be so crappy, so i convinced my parents to take me back to blockbuster to return it and the guy at the counter suggested Virtua Fighter instead. Thank goodness.

The first fighter I ever played was Barbarian for the Amstrad, then Mortal Kombat on the GameGear, followed by Street Fighter II on the SNES. My first 3d fighter was probably One Must Fall on the PC, what a piece of trash.

SFII
i remember seeing it at a drive in movie theatre, i was 4 at the time and i had to stand on a chair to play it with my cousin. Needless to say I lost everytime because i just mashed buttons together, but that was my first time ever playing a fighter

My first fighter may very well have been TMNT Tournament Fighters on NES. I can't remember any before that one...

SF2 (I think is was Super Street Fighter 2) at the Swimming Pool - A.W.E.S.O.M.E. - at the time I thought I sucked at this game because i didn't have as much practice as the other kids, or have a SNES, but that really doesn't explain why i still suck...
Re: The Fighter that started it all for you?
There was a renaissance of fighters in 1999-2000.
For me the fighters that got me back into gaming were
Street Fighter 3 3rd strike
Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Powerstone
Capcom Vs Snk
Mark Of the Wolves
Last Blade 2
Dead Or Alive 2
Soul Calibur
Tekken Tag Tournament
To me those were some of the finest fighters ever released.
