I came into this post with tons of suggestions but read through the responses and most of them have been said already.
Anyway, what I would recommend:
Black Books
Nick Frost's Danger! 50,000 Volts
Father Ted
Green Wing
The League of Gentlemen
Look Around You
Spaced
Obviously I don't know what your taste in comedy is, or how well British comedy translates but that's the sort of stuff I enjoy.

I always liked
The Young Ones . Funny and bizzare comedy plus they had some awsome musical guests.
Black Adder is good, and of coarse Monty Python is just great.
I have to agree, the Bristish Office was just bland to me. I am a huge fan of the US version and I think they just took it in a better direction.

It's funny, I read your post and it reminded me I have Garth Merenghi's Darkplace sitting on my DVD shelves waiting to be watched. I've had it for about a year or so and still not remembered to watch it yet!
