Sometimes what I need is to just clear my head. Between all the things I have in-process for the site, my day job, and my personal life, sometimes by about 2pm my brain is flooded with thoughts and just needs to "reboot".
Sometimes a walk outside for a few minutes helps, but sometimes I need more than that.
At times I'm more mentally exhausted than physically.
I think there is alot of good that can come out of meditation, but how you do is up to you. The most important thing is to find a calming environment with very little noise and few distractions. Taoist philosiphy is great doorway to learning calming and meditative practices. I'd recomend a book called Pratical Taoism by James Cleary. Really helped me through depression in high school, and i read through it a year ago and found it was still great advice. It's a very direct, concise and informative book about Taoism and meditation in the "modern world" or wherever the heck we are....
Breathing is important. Basically it's all about focusing on your breathing(deep, slow breathing from your stomach) and trying to clear your head. Most people can't help "thinking" though, so you just have to learn to try not to actually focus on any thought that pops into your head, just let it go.
I'm a beginner when it comes to meditating. Many people focus on a question or a problem when they meditate and supposedly get their answers. Other people reach some kind of enlightenment or "altered" state. For me, I just find that it helps me relax and I seem to have more energy. That's enough for me, I don't plan of joining a monastery or becoming a hermit anytime soon
I think everyone just needs some time in the day to shut the world out, even if it's just for fifteen minutes. Everyone meditates their own way, some people actually do considering walking a form of meditation. There's a TON of info on the net about meditating, and some of it is so deep it's scary, so I'd say just find a way that is simple and practical
