you should always play on the original hardware.

Shenmue is awesome. It is really slow to begin with, but by the time you finish the game you won't be able to wait to play Shenmue 2. After that, you'll be like the rest of us, begging Sega to make Shenmue 3 or at least finish the story somehow.

Shenmue it seems is one of those games where you either love it or you hate it. I would guesstimate about three quarters of people who play it love it, while the rest hate it. Like others have said, I think it takes a different kind of gamer to really appreciate the game, but a lot of people like games that you just pick it up and get right into the action. Shenmue isn't like that. Truthfully, the action doesn't even really start to pick up until the end of the game, but it continues (and escalates) in the second one.
