Sega Saturn Review

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

Here is my review for the Sega Saturn in very simplistic form.

Console Design: A (Very minimalistic, very clean, very good looking, solid design, and sturdy motor makes this one of my top 5 consoles in appearance and design)

Console Durability: B (Havent heard anything bad other than the cart slot slowly dying)

Controllers: A (Both are confortable, reliable, and have excellent D-pads, the 3D pad is widely considered a god-send but I cant seem to find anything redeaming about it)

Media: B (CD's are used to full extent most times, and built in memory served its purpouse, although its a bit small for serious collectors)

Media Packaging: B (I for one love these cases, they are clean, large, and look great on a shelf, despite the fact they scratch easy)

Games overall: B/C (Import seen great, USA side is meh, still, there are great arcade games and several beautiful 2D style games)

Graphics: D/B (3D is unremarkable but can be pushed to quite an extent, the 2D on this system is AMAZING!)

Collectabilty: C (Lots of games are readily available, even if some of the better titles are more expensive, complete games further the price, great for those that appreciate arcade games though and the import seen.)

Overall: B (Great System, one of my personal favorites, but its still not the best.)

YAY NEW NAME!!! Well with the now departed Genesis, ive noticed, theres not alot of new game reviews on this site. Granted, its a retro site and all, but think, your going back looking for good games you missed in the past, well what about good games you missed as of recent? As of such I am now review 32bitz on. And I will be reviewing games for PS1, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, and Playstation 3 w/ a hint of 360 help from my best friend if he wants to chip in a review. I am also now willing to take requests, and thankyou for reading, and until next time, you guys take it easy.

Since I reviewed the Saturn last time, lets take a look at the Dreamcast, SEGA's last attempt to be king of the home console market.

Console Design: A+ (Once again minimalistic Sega has created a beautiful console, in cream white w/ gray paneling, its something im not ashamed to show off in public. Its also very compact, making it look exactly like it is, a small, wonderful system that was shunned in the end to a flashy new peice of hardware.)

Console Durability: C (constant problems with the drive motor brings this down)

Controllers: A+ (Put the SixAxiS layout on this controller and you will be in heaven, unfortunately the handles are pretty small and can hurt your fingers after long periods of play)

Media: B (Uses GD-Roms which while they carry more than enough room for most games, the DVD revolution hit at the wrong time and pushed this format straight out the window)

Media Packaging: B (Standard CD cases w/ an attractive white color scheme, which was then replaced in favor of a less appealing black style ex. PS2 cases)

Games overall: B/A (Lots of neat and inovative games, only to be overshadowed by the 400+ Japan library.)

Graphics: A (Although much less powerfull than the Playstation 2, games often looked cleaner and ran better on the Dreamcast due to developer ease of programming for the DC.)

Collectabilty: A (Tons of great games often complete, you will have more selections if you import but still this is a fun system to collect for)

Overall: C/A (Okay, you may ask yourself right now. WTF??? Yes I praise the DC through the review but it gets a mediocre score mainly due to the fact that, well its my review, and I refuse to jump on the DC wagon as it being the best console, its great yes, but not that great, its lots of fun to collect for but its just not my perticular cup of tea. So in otherwords, as a system, its awesome, everything is done near perfect, but my simple opinion is that it isnt that great.)

Wouldn't say the Dreamcast is less powerful. Actually they are pretty even, I haven't seen anything on the PS2 yet that a Dreamcast couldn't do.

HD output and Grant Turismo 4 @ 1080i. Lets see a DC do that! But really, they are pretty close, but still a little can go a long way in hardware.

Programmers had untill 2001 to crank out titles on the Dreamcast. If they had 5 years with the system like Polyphony had with the PS2, who knows how games would have looked on the DC?

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Sony Playstation 3

Perfection... hardly... masterful... definately. This game is what I see as the pinacle of this generation. So much is done near-perfectly it will leave even the hardest of the hardcore in awe. I have never owned a Metal Gear game, and have only played the first when I was at age 7. But this cinematic experience is so complete and discriptive, even newbies can jump right in. The control is dead on and easy to get used to. The presentation is amazing. The cutscenes are long but real you in and encourage you to keep your hands on the controller by instructing you to press button commands to view different angles etc. The game will take you about 20 hours first playthrough, then their are easter eggs, MGO, and awards to rack up. Speaking of which MGO... is like Counterstrike on numerous steroids. Excellent squad based matches, customizable characters, and overall is a mass amount of fun. The graphics are the best ive seen, the cutscenes make you think of cgi but its the actual in game engine, running at a wonderful 60fps. The sound is just as good, with holywood level voice acters and great sound samples. Even for the non-metalgearist this is a game that ABSOLUTLY MUST BE IN YOUR COllECTION. Regarding the story I almost cant say anything or it will spoil it, frankly, i had more to say so PM me if you really, really, REALLY need to know. And to all the other people out there, PLZ STOP REPLYING ON THIS THREAD PM ME. I would not want my readers to go through tons of arguments and appraisles just to read a review.

Graphics: 100/100
Sound: 100/100
Control: 100/100
Accesability: 90/100
----------------------
Art: 99/100
Music: 90/100
Playability: 99/100
Lasting Value: 100/100

Overall: 778/800, Masterful, A+++
