I don't play a lot of modern games so my list is very short.
Sonic Mania

Your Top Games of the Decade 2010-2019
Re: Your Top Games of the Decade 2010-2019
I am going to post year by year, many of these games I did not play the year they came out (ex: alan wake came out in 2010, I played it in 2017, but I will include it in 2010 for ease of chronicling) Here are my first 5 years of the decade, this has been a lot of fun looking back through the decade to see all the amazing stuff that came out this year
2010: Mario Galaxy 2 -clear winner here, one of the best games ever, and probably the best 3d platformer ever made only surpassed by Mario Odyssey
Honorable mentions:
1) Alan Wake
2) Castlevania lords of shadows: it gets a lot of hate for being a GOW clone but it is still one of my favorite games of the year, and a worthy entry into the castlevania series. I tend to love games like this, but I also really enjoy the story in the lords series, it is a totally different twist on the franchise and it all wraps up nicely. CV purists may hate it, but I enjoyed the fresh take on the story of trevor, simon, and alucard.
2011: tie: Batman Arkham city and Mario 3d land: arkham city needs no explanation, and if there is a mario game released and I played it, odds are it will be my favorite game that year
Honorable mentions:
1) outland: amazing indie platformer with cool color switching mechanic and a unique graphical style, lots of great platforming challenges and I believe this was the first game that used the color/dimension switching mechanic which is now seen in a few random platformers(like guacamelee for example)
2)adv of shuggy: I bought it on sale for .29, literally the best 29 cents I have ever spent, I don't even remember what kind of game it was I just remember loving it
2012: Resident Evil 6: screw the hate, I love this game and it is definitely my game of the year for 2012. To me, this was a natural evolution of the series, the virus has gotten out of control, crazy things are happening, and the STAR team is no longer a surprised scared group of people, rather they are a group of battle hardened zombie slayers. Sure, it is more of a horror action than survival horror but with awesome set pieces and 3 different story lines that randomnly intersect you get a lot of great content here.
Honorable mentions
1)Max Payne 3
2) Mutant Mudds deluxe: fun indie platformer, that gives you a small jetpack to hover and lets you jump into and out of the foreground and background. I have a soft spot for it since it is my first ever steam game
3) torchlight 2: amazing diablo 2 clone and probably the reason I have carpal tunnel, and no, that is not a joke, I believe this is actually the game that gave me carpal tunnel.
2013: Last of us
Honorable mentions:
1) Volgar the viking: mega hard, skill based, methodical, volgar is a great game that will kick your ass but it is also one of those games that you feel yourself constantly getting better. It makes you feel like a real bad ass when you finally do master the levels.
2) rogue legacy: I normally hate rogue-lites but everything in this game was handled so well, really fun mechanics and a smooth upgrade system made you feel like you were always making progress. Most of the time, if I do beat a rogue lite, it is one and done, this game kept me coming back for more and I wound up going through it about 4 times
2014: wings of vi: hardest and most satisfying game I ever played, a must play if you dont mind dying 1000's of times. I literally died over 600 times on the final boss, but it is so mechanically solid it never felt cheap.
Honorable mentions:
1) Shovel knight: I hate that this is not my GOTY but wings of vi just edges it out by a hair, although in fairness I am far more likely to replay shovel knight
2) fenix rage: a rage based “platformer” where you can dash infinitely, this game is all about speed, dodging tons of obstacles, and collecting cookie recipes, which you can then use to make real life cookies, seriously.
3) Blood of the werewolf: A nod to classic horror films this game has you playing as a female werewolf, when you are indoors you play as a human with a crossbow but as soon as you step out into the full moon you change into a werewolf. The game has you switching back and forth consistently, thematically it is very much what a modern day castlevania would look like and includes boss fights from all yout favorite classic horror films, with the frankenstein monster being the final boss. Super hard, but with loads of checkpoints and infinite respawns it never feels frustrating.
4) Concursion : one of the oddest and most endearing games I have ever played, the game has you playing in several different styles that emulate popular classic games (mario, ninja gaiden, pac man, and a 2d shmup, along with a random astronaut game) the draw of the game is that each level mixes in different playstyles to allow for some truly crazy level design, it is tough to describe but an absolute blast to play and a definite must play for retro gamers.
5)Evil within: I love survivial horror, this game is top notch surivival horror, nothing else to say really.
2015: pretty shitty year for AAA gaming, the only decent one this year is RE: revelations 2, but lots of good indies
GOTY: tie: Castle in the darkness and Dameon Detective gaiden castle: castle in the darkness is a super hard indie game that has you playing a knight going through a castle loaded with instant deaths, damene detective gaiden is an amazing mario style game with lots of levels and tons of cool costume.
Honorable mention:
1) Ori and the blind forest
2) Fist slash: 8 bit ninja gaiden clone, holds the distinction of being the only game in my life that I want to beat but cannot, I replay it nearly every year, still havent beat it, the last level is basically impossible but one day I will beat it, I mean I beat battletoads I have to be able to beat this...right?
3) Super Cyborg: awesome contra clone, tough as nails, harder than any contra IMO, most annoying final boss ever
2010: Mario Galaxy 2 -clear winner here, one of the best games ever, and probably the best 3d platformer ever made only surpassed by Mario Odyssey
Honorable mentions:

Re: Your Top Games of the Decade 2010-2019
My list is short, this was a decade of constant monetization and paid sevice with underwheming singleplayer through many games. i wouldent do these remaining games any justice trying to explain in detail why they're great
Skyrim (despite being part of the current Bethesda shitshow, this games impact connot be denied)
Final Fantasy XV ( after i got rid of the nostagic fog that i was unfairly using on every Final fantasy game, i ended up loving this expierence.)
The Witcher 3 (nearly perfect imo)
Mass Effect 2 ( had to add this, a staple that reminds us of a better time in gaming, as it dropped in 2010.)
Super Mario Galaxy 2 ( platformers dont get much better)
A lot of rpgs, yes. But i mainly play older video games anyways.

Oof, I want to participate but I'll have to sit down and look through the years to figure out what to pick. It's really throwing me off realizing how old some of these games are, they still feel new to me.

Then i go to check and they came out like 8 years agoForlorn Drifter wrote:Oof, I want to participate but I'll have to sit down and look through the years to figure out what to pick.
