Recommend me some good SRPG's
Re: Recommend me some good SRPG's
The GameCube one runs on average from like 100-120 if you’re not too crazy about being one and done about it, so its twice what it sold for then. It’s a decent game for sure, better than the Wii one. The sacred stones 2nd on the GBA for the US I was partial to as was I for the original 3DS release too as it would resurrect any killed off for the next map if you so wished it. A great learning tool without being beaten to death over restarts.

Download Dolphin and find an ISO of Path of Radiance. It's my favorite of the pre-3DS series, but yeah, it's pricey af.

Dark Wizard for the Sega CD is great - takes some work to get into it since the documentation is so poor and there are a lot of mechanics to learn. You have four rulers to choose from, four races for warriors (with different capabilities), 4 basic warrior classes, three alignments (lawful, chaos neutral) for the warriors. And four different rosters of summoned monsters (one for each ruler) with varying capabilities.
There are tons of armor and weapons to equip.
The battlefields are huge - with hex grids and zones of control (which I always favor). You wind up with armies of 40 units - all but three of which you choose what to have.
And a lot of side quests for special units, weapons, items and what not to discover.
The biggest drawback is an AI that is generally dumber than a box of rocks - but most strategy console games suffer from that.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Shining Force CD shouldn't be overlooked - while simpler in some ways than SF1 and SF2 it is still fun. It is just two of the Shining Force game gear games put together- but it has two extra additions - one if which is a battle with all of the bosses from the earlier parts of the game.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Master of Monsters for the Sega Genesis is also very good. (Beware of the PS1 version/remake it is a true turkey.)
------------------------------------------------------------
Brigandine (mentioned earlier) for the PS1 is also very good (people usually either really hate it or really really like it) - very amenable to creating your own challenges,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Rebelstar Tactical Command for the GBA is worth a look. It doesn't hold up to more than one or two playthroughs though since there is no way to vary the play - strictly linear and no secrets to discover.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mentioned earlier, Nectaris is in a class by itself. A lot of fairly challenging scenarios that make you do some work to win. The early scenarios are pretty basic but the later ones get much more interesting. One of the few strategy games where line tactics will not work - the AI cuts lines into swiss cheese. You get a total of 108 scenarios to play on the disc - since it doesn't go for much (as such things go) it is also an incredible bargain
------------------------------------------------------------
@op - You mentioned Warsong - if you haven't tried doing so you can hang out in the first battle (rather than slinking off as the game wants you to) and it is possible to win the scenario by defeating all of the enemies - darn hard and you can't always do it - but rewarding if you like a challenge. It doesn't affect the later gameplay much - you wind up with more money for the next scenario and a bit more experience but that is it.

I used to do that all the time in Warsong, it was a lot of fun, and a nice challenge. I used to try and not use bladarov as much as possible and let garret and the other units farm for xp, it did make the game a bit easier but by the time I figured out that trick I had already mastered the game so it didnt really matter either way.
Some unique suggestions here, is shining force cd different than the genesis ones? You mentioned it was the 2 game gear games combined into one but are those games unique or just ports of the genesis games?

The game gear games are different than the genesis ones. The biggest difference is that there are no towns to explore and interact with NPCs. There is a camp between battles that has a shop where you can buy a few things.
The two game gear games are called books - there is a third and fourth book added - the third book has a few battles added unique to the sega cd version and a fourth book which is one battle set in a museum where the displays are all of the bosses that come to life. (This is one of the two hardest battles (IMHO) in the series.)

Re: Recommend me some good SRPG's
Chronology-wise, the series goes Shining Force 1, then the first two GG games (which are ported to the Sega CD). They have children of the characters in SF1 as playable units. Then there's Shining Force Final Conflict on the GG, which got a translation patch, which serves as a bridge between the end of SF1 and SF2. Then SF2 comes. These together form a fairly cohesive story. After that you have Shining in the Darkness as its own thing, and then Shining the Holy Ark setting up some world building for Shining Force III. Oh, and Shining Wisdom has a couple NPCs from Shining Force II, but it's not obvious in the Working Designs translations (the characters were renamed).
As mentioned, the GG games are stripped down a bit. It's only battles and menu towns. Shining Force 2, on the other hand, expands the RPG exploration elements; instead of being forced from one battle to the next like in Shining Force 1 you have much more freedom to progress like a traditional JRPG. It's still linear for the most part, but you can do things like revisit old areas (maybe to get weapons for a new force member or get an item you couldn't before). And the towns in general have a bit more going on in them.
