Yea, I'm having a hard time finding a controller... but if you can round one up the system (unless it's a goldstar) is worth every bit of $20. You can usually find pretty good deals on amazon and ebay from time to time. I got star control 2 from amazon for $30 and it included the map, box and instructions.

I would add Lost Eden to this list but cannot figure it out for the life of me, and I'm the same way with the Alone in the Dark series.

All models, as far as I know (definitely the two Panasonic models, and I think the Goldstar and Sanyo (the $20 is NOT a Sanyo, FYI)) just use a standard power cable and regular RCA cables. The controller might end up being $20-30 unless you're lucky. The Panasonic models play burnt games just fine, but I've heard reports of the Goldstar having troubles. Not sure about the Sanyo.

I've owned all four models in the past, but it's been years since I've touched the Goldstar or Sanyo T.R.Y., so my memory is a bit fuzzy on them.

$20 is a decent deal.

You can find a third party controller from some retailers on the web for about $8

I rarely play my 3DO. If you are collecting just for collecting sake, buy it.

If you are purchasing it thinking you are getting a good console, pass.

What about region locks? Will I be able to play Japanese games easily, or is it complex?

How reliable a system is the 3DO? Will it last me a good while, or are they failure-prone?

Also, any game recommendations would be nice, I suppose. I'm already planning to get Super Street Fighter II, Samurai Shodown and Star Control 2. Heck, I'll probably get every 2D Fighter on it, even Rise of the Robots.

These are the ones i can answer, cant help with prices for the US though.

1. 3DO is completely region free, just stick in a JP game and it should work.

2. The panasonic models seem pretty sturdy. The goldstars seem pretty infamously bad. The goldstars are also known for being awkward to play some game and burnt games on.

3. Heres some cool stuff on 3do.
powers kingdom - interesting little strategy game. Gets mixed but generally postive reviews
starblade - the game from the start of tekken 5. nice shmup
star control 2 - probably the besty game for the system
luciennes quest - Good but fairly rare RPG for the system.
super street fighter 2 turbo - great fighter, but i'd recommend finding the 6 button pad for it
samurai shodown 2 - another great fighter
D - Good if you dont have it for a later system
Night Trap - possibly the best port. hilariously cheesy
Daedalus encounter - supposedly a decent FMV game
corpse killer - a good port of a brilliant bad game
Theme Park - a good port
casper - another good port
gex - great platformer
return fire - fun vehicle shooter with capture the flag style gameplay
soccer kid - interesting looking platformer
Road Rash - Easily the best version for any system
Wing Commander 3 - Some love it, i dont. Hit or miss.

No it's not. It's mostly region free. The Japanese console has extra Japanese text support for a few games (mostly RPGs and other text-heavy games). MOST games are region free.

Thanks for the info, guys. If it's non-Goldstar, I'll get it for sure. I'd get it just for the Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hakusho games, as Sailor Moon was my first anime and I once marathoned 20ish episodes of Yu Yu Hakusho with some friends in college. Ah, the good times...

Plus I have soft spot for 90's PC games.

There is nothing wrong with the 3DO. It performs just as good as any other older cd based system I have ever used, it has plenty of games, it doesn't cost an arm and a leg anymore...
