Try making that argument at an Apple store. You never know...

I might next time I'm down there. I really wouldn't have cared if ios11 wasn't a forced download. I'd have left 10 on there and my phone had been fine using it and 11 caused it to turn into a buggy slog. The other day I tried to make a call, it failed, so I tried again and it tried to twice load dialing again and the phone froze so hard I had to hold the button down a 1/2 minute just to kill it and it took awhile longer than standard to start back up.

Whacked out junk around stuff just crashing when I try an open it, or it stutters and then backs up a load bar to re-load it are pretty normal.

They love to write 'ios11 is here: install now, later, remind me.' It then eats up all your space with it there, you can't remove it, and if you keep deferring the later/remind me, eventually it says next time you plug this phone in, and it's charging between various hours, we'll just install it anyway. That's where I am with it. :(

I know some folks who managed to stave off the install, so it's not technically a forced install, but it is a complicated enough process to keep the update at bay that it isn't exactly optional, either.

On my Samsung, I usually leave Data and Wifi turned off. When I do enable it, I would get a nag screen to update one or more Apps. I have a 128gb SD Card, yet the updates all will only go to the internal memory! After my internal memory started getting wiped out by the updates and the nag screen headache, turned updates all off and rolled back updates on any non used Apps.

Based on reading all the posts, a rollback of the iPhone update not possible? Perhaps if the battery replacement discount at the Apple store not an option for your older phone then maybe the rollback from 11 to 10 could be done at the Apple Service Center? There has to be a way to restore back to the original rom; that is if not an overwritten flash chip. Maybe Apple might have the older software on file at their tech department level?

There are ways to download the older iOS yourself, but could brick your phone. The link below mentions the official rollback download was only available during iOS11 beta period. Your iPhone 5 was affected by the update which was not easy to disable; I would use that fire to get the battery discount.

I tried to follow the steps on a rollback and it wouldn't behave. Apple refuses to do that themselves. I couldn't find a version of 10 I could tossed on my phone and since I don't have iTunes installed, no old backup to exploit like that link suggests. I've exhausted my options and basically am stuck until (and I hope sooner than later) it fails. Almost tempted to accidentally have an accident with it and let the damn thing fail.

Well, that's a problem right there. This procedure won't work for you unless you install itunes.

Don't get me wrong; I can understand why you might not want to install itunes. I absolutely hated itunes on windows. I found it very annoying; on the other hand, itunes on MacOS is very elegant because it serves as the center of digital media on that Operating System. In windows, itunes wants to be the center of your digital media, but none of the other applications (nor windows itself) are designed with itunes in mind. Because of this, itunes acts like a little Napoleon in Windows; itunes wants to take control, but the rest of your digital media applications resist.

Anyway, you need itunes to roll back your iOS. There's no getting around this.

iTunes has always been better on Mac.

I've had to be vigilant to not upgrade to iOS 11 on my SE. 10 works fine. Probably my favorite version of iOS since 5 or 7. I just wish they'd stop the yearly release cycle for ios and Mac OS to get stuff right. Apple isn't the same company it was when Jobs was CEO.

Apple Slowing Down Older iPhone - $29 Battery - Spectre Flaw

Post by CRTGAMER »

Interesting. Now a forced update to overcome the Meltdown and Spectre security flaw? I could not help noticing the name to the old Mac Spectre game. Best to sign up for that $29 battery while the supply is available especially on older phones.

Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaws affect all iOS and Mac devices

Even non-Intel CPUs are affected by Meltdown and Spectre, but most already have mitigations in place. We’ve been waiting to hear from Apple ever since we first heard about the far-reaching Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaws earlier this week, and the company has finally responded with some not-so-good news: All Mac and iOS devices are affected. That's right, all of them. However, Apple ensures us there's no reason to panic.

Apple has already released mitigations for the Intel chip flaw in Macs as part of macOS 10.13.2 released in December to help defend against Meltdown exploits. Apple also says iOS 11.2 and tvOS 11.2 contained Meltdown mitigations as well, meaning that iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV devices are as vulnerable as PCs. Android phones are only susceptible to Spectre’s flaw.Of note, Apple says Apple Watch is not susceptible to the Spectre or Meltdown bugs. Apple has been making its own A-series systems on a chip since the iPhone 4 in 2010. Initially based on ARM’s Cortex architecture, the A6 introduced in 2012 debuted an Apple-designed ARM CPU that has since been used in iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs.
Apple on Jan 5, 2017 wrote:https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208394

About speculative execution vulnerabilities in ARM-based and Intel CPUs

Security researchers have recently uncovered security issues known by two names, Meltdown and Spectre. These issues apply to all modern processors and affect nearly all computing devices and operating systems. All Mac systems and iOS devices are affected, but there are no known exploits impacting customers at this time. Since exploiting many of these issues requires a malicious app to be loaded on your Mac or iOS device, we recommend downloading software only from trusted sources such as the App Store. Apple has already released mitigations in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2 to help defend against Meltdown. Apple Watch is not affected by either Meltdown or Spectre. In the coming days we plan to release mitigations in Safari to help defend against Spectre. We continue to develop and test further mitigations for these issues and will release them in upcoming updates of iOS, macOS, and tvOS.

I had it installed when I tried multiple times over a few days to fix it, then got fed up and removed it because it's perpetual need to gobble resources while nagging about updates got on my nerves. I prefer using a free third party tool to put my music on there or remove it as it has no baggage. :) Your reason there on why it sucks is why it's gone again.

Meltdown does not affect AMD CPUs, and I hadn’t heard it affected ARM cores, either, so you’re might want to take that with a grain of salt until ARM holdings issues a response. That said, with Apple aiming for eventual OS integration, they probably have an Intel build of iOS that would be vulnerable.

Spectre affects all modern CPUs and is not an easy fix. It may never be perfectly patched in software.
