My guess is that was more meant to imply he did have a preference toward one or the other, just that he'll play good games. I can see where that would keep things fresh, as you'd constantly alternate between styles. That's where a lack of structure can certainly be useful... although that could be planned as well.

I don't actually plan a whole lot as far as gaming goes. I will browse my library, and kind of settle on what I feel like I might want to play. I also end up with a good bit of recency bias, as I generally will play any new games I buy for at least a bit. If something gets its hooks in me, then that's what I roll with. :) That being said, I also sometimes get a hankering to play a particular system if I feel it hasn't been played in quite a while. I'm starting to get that with the Saturn right now, so we'll see where that goes.

And then there's Breath of the Wild, which almost saw me drop everything. Except for that excellent dose of retro goodness, Blaster Master Zero. Huh. I might have a preference after all.

I've known you long enough to confirm this is true.

Nothing wrong with that, just how you roll. 8)

I think any attempt to limit discussion to so-called "retro" games is futile, because at their core, games are games. Where is the line between what's classic and what's current? Do late releases delay a console moving into the classic space? What about all the recent indie games that are legitimately retro in design, as opposed to classic or just old, that ape older styles? What about studio titles like Mega Man 9 and 10? What about "HD" re-releases and remasters of older games?

Sure, many of us do talk about more recent games, but there's still an undercurrent of love for classic games that continues to pull us all to this space. Discussions arise here that wouldn't arise on forums committed to more recent games and platforms. And just because some of us aren't playing older games (or really any games, alas) right now doesn't mean we don't still love them and want to talk about them.

Dave, I get what you are talking about with the "retro blahs". Maybe you just need some time apart from your older games for a little while. Then when you go back to them, the truly great ones will feel fresh again.

And definitely don't feel bad about revisiting games you love. I know that there's often a push to play something "new", and clear out that backlog, but sometimes playing a classic is cathartic. It's why I replay so many NES games. :)

I pretty much all over the place, as long as you look back 1 or 2 generations.

I do get disenchanted sometimes, but there's always something else to recall or explore in another way. Too much actually, which tends to make me lose focus all too often (a problem in oif itself).

What kills it for me is roadblocks in my retro focus points, like how I met with utter failure trying to A/V mod my famicom for disk system through usb use (RF ain't cutting it, and I refuse to play disk system games any other way). It was definitely a thrill kill. Wouldn't be an issue if I'd just emulate the damn thing like most gamers. I'm stubborn and particular, which is why I'll make another attempt sometime.

I started off retro though (always behind at least one generation). Handhelds are my only contact with the current age.

You keep saying you don't differentiate, yet here you are talking on a forum specifically designed for retro gaming. I have to wonder how you ended up here, unless you were specifically searching for a retro gaming forum.
You say that as if there's a rule that you can't post on a retro gaming forum unless you play only retro games.

I joined the forums here back when retro gaming wasn't as popular as it is today. I was still playing my old game consoles, but that wasn't something I could talk about with most people at the time. So it was like, "WOW! A community devoted to talking about old games? Sign me up!"

I've said before in other threads, one of my favorite things about the Racketboy forums is being able to talk about games new and old. I joined the forums to talk about old games, but I didn't mind when more and more threads were about new games. The community here is great, so I was glad to have one forum to suit all of my gaming needs rather than having to frequent multiple gaming forums.

Also, because Racketboy is retro-centric, I fit in more with the crowd. I want to talk about the Nintendo Switch with people my own age, and not people that have only read about how huge the NES was, or what the SNES vs Genesis console wars were like.

Lately I've really only been playing stuff with friends online. Most of my free time has been eaten up by other hobbies or by work and commute difficulties. There are lots of games I would love to play that I just don't feel I have time for or want to start up at the moment. I also have several games sitting half done that I want to go back to, but forcing myself to start them up just hasn't worked.

Not even remotely what I said, nor what I was implying.

Anyway, you see no difference between retro or classic games, that's cool. Whatever works for you.
