Here is a hot take not loved by the retro community. I LOVE buying digital, because there are tons of old games that aren't normally available on the market in a physical release that helps show a developer that there is an audience for it.

Nothing wrong with that, when it's not available elsewhere. I'd add an addendum, though: I love to buy DRM-free digital. GOG is one of my favorite storefronts.

Depending on the game, ill buy it New to support the developer, but i feel certain games are just cash grabs by the developers.

For example ill buy the new Zelda game New, pre-order it on Amazon.

Very few games i buy New, last game i bought New or for full price was Dishonored 2 on steam, totally worth it.

Totally starting to agree with this more, especially as developers re-release games and dont leave them hanging on a dead platform.

I Wish all games were on steam, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on steam would be great!

I'm not as anti-new as your post, but I'm with you on this. I've only bought two Call of Duty games new - Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare. I saw the series as nothing but a cash grab after Call of Duty 4. I was cautiously optimistic when I saw that they were casting Kevin Spacey for Advanced Warfare, but I still waited until it dropped to $40 used to take the plunge there, though. After seeing the sharp spike in single player writing and acting quality with that one, however, I pre-ordered Black Ops III and Infinite Warfare; they restored my confidence in the franchise's ability to produce a good single player experience (and they've to lose that confidence again).

Final Fantasy, however, I've never pre-ordered (excluding the sort-of-but-not-really related games like Bravely Default); by the time I had the money to make my own pre-orders, they'd lost that confidence from me, and they still haven't regained it.*

For the most part, I think, I make those calls sort of opposite to the way you do; your post seems to say that you don't buy new unless it's a series that you have a special love for whereas I buy new if I'm interested unless the developer has lost my confidence. Might seem like a silly system, but it's just how my mind works.

*Disclaimer - I have the Final Fantasy VII remake preordered because oh my god that game.

I try not to buy too many games new, but if I want to support the dev and I have the money, then I might buy the game new.

Another thing is that many games that I buy are a bit niche, and some of those don't really go down in price that quickly (if at all). For example, Dungeon Travelers 2 (a game I really like even if I haven't finished it yet ha), has been out for about a year and half but is still going for at least $40 on Amazon. It's not like that's the only game that has done that either, so I find it's sometimes cheaper to get the game near launch than it is to wait a year or more, as Amazon Prime gives a small discount to new games. Of course, I have to guess a bit on what I think will or will not go down in price, but I've generally been pretty good at guessing.

I also like buying digital - hard not to for PC gaming these days. Like Sarge, I prefer GOG if possible.

My physical game buying is very, very limited these days. I buy AAA Xbox One games on disc because it takes DAYS to download them from the Xbox Live store, but I only have like... 4 games for it.

Retro, I am only buying physical games for Atari 2600, 7800, and 800XL - and even then, only ones I actually want to play. I still buy a Genesis game every now and then because I have a short list that I am constantly on the lookout for.

But I have been giving serious thought to setting up a RetroPie Raspberry Pi 3 system with my Buffalo SNES pad and loading it up with all my favorites...

I buy new games if it's something I already know I love and I want to support.

And like others have said I usually don't buy physical games these days unless they're for an old platform.

When an indie game tries to revive a classic genre, I'll buy those new (eg. Shovel Knight, Freedom Planet...). These belong to genres I really love, but they've more or less been discarded by modern game companies, so something about that makes me set aside my usual inclination to wait for it to land in the bargain bin.
