ehh that list is good, but there's a lot of DC greatness that sadly didn't migrate to PS2, GC & xbox. the "collection" last gen was kind've a sham with Space Channel 5 part 2 tacked on, sadly.
i suppose it's not as bad as the Saturn, though...now there's a system with quality titles left to die. was so glad to see NiGHTS & Guardian Heroes remade last gen, along with a few fighters.

And now I feel old. I remember playing a tennis game on one in the mall Sears. You know, back when they actually had some video games and demo units!
Re: There are very few Dreamcast exclusives left...
I miss when places did that. I'm not even sure any local store(outside of gamestop) has demo units anymore. I loved going to stores and doing that but there's almost no point if you already own the system since demos are put out ahead of time anyways so you can try them for yourself without going anywhere. That was kinda how I annoyed my dad a lot...would go to gamestop and I could've spent hours there if I wanted to just playing demos and such...

Yeah, when I was a kid with no money, that was the highlight of places like Walmart and Toys 'R' Us. I remember discovering Panzer Dragoon that way. (Although the one I played was actually Zwei.) And playing Yoshi's Island at Walmart was an absolute revelation. My brother and I knew we had to track that game down at that moment.

I largely disagree with this statement, based on the emboldened portion.
dsheinem wrote:For example, if we look at this site's own DC article on "defining games" there are only 3-4 titles that can't be found elsewhere (other consoles or PCs), often with enhanced features and upscaled resolutions.
That figure appears to ignore the small list at the end, as well as Mars Matrix, and Giga Wing. Rather than itemize that list, based on the first quote above, I'll step through a bit of the list of top 100 highest rated Dreamcast games on GameFAQs (minimum 50 votes):
This still neglects a wealth of other lesser known exclusives, like Napple Tale, Blue Submarine no. 6, Samba De Amigo 2000, Zero Gunner 2, Cosmic Smash, Border Down, etc. We could really get down into the weeds and compare console versions on a very minute scale, or play this game in reverse, but it's pretty disingenuous to say that the Dreamcast's library has been made any more obsolete than, say, the PS2 library: How many popular/acclaimed titles haven't received HD re-releases, or weren't originally multiplatform releases. Yet that doesn't preclude the rest of the library from making the console a worthy investment of time/resources. There's an almost monolithic difference in scale between the libraries of the Dreamcast and PS2, but on average, I think they can be summed up with: If you aren't finding good games to play, for the console, then you aren't looking.

Pierrot, I appreciate the work you did here, but I still think that there aren't a lot of truly great exclusives left for the system. A lot of the titles on the lower part of the list here, for example, are games with typically middling to poor review scores...
Most of your comments are in the realm of "eh, I still think Game X is probably better on the DC." That ignores a lot of advantages that those games' releases on these other platforms provide: HD upscaling, customization of controls, playability across multiple platforms (e.g. I can stick my PS2 disc of a DC port in my PS3 or my 360 disc in my Xbox One, etc.), and other graphical and gameplay enhancements, additional modes, supported online play, etc. I find it hard to support the argument that many of these cross-platform games are better on the DC, unless we really do get "into the weeds" on them and you can demonstrate otherwise. Right now many of your arguments for the DC port being better seem to be subjective...
I also mentioned in my original post that MAME now can emulate perfectly a lot of the DC games that are arcade ports on your list that weren't elsewhere available. So stuff like Mars Matrix and Giga Wing 2 really don't require a DC to play anymore.
I think we agree that the overall DC obsolescence is a lot greater than something like the obsolescence of the libraries for the PS2, Atari VCS, or even the Xbox because the DC had a fairly small library in the USA (~250 games) compared to those other systems. I'd guess that almost half of that library is now available elsewhere officially (or easily playable via arcade emulation), including the vast majority of its best titles.

I think it's important for a platform to maintain its exclusives, because exclusives give a platform its personality.

70 to 100 metacritic score is middling? 0_o

I could be mistaken about what I wrote, but in all but perhaps a couple cases, this comment would have been in regard to games ported from the Naomi arcade system. Considering the Dreamcast and Naomi are such similar architectures, there's little reason for ports to other consoles to perform considerably (if at all) better. Also, as far as I'm aware, there is only one (perhaps two) games in that list which provide online competitive play on PSN or Xbox Live, but before too long, that's liable to not be a feature, anyway.

I don't really see the relevance of backward compatibility. It seems like your definition of "better" is based more on convenience, and--

--considering this, there's little reason to own anything other than a PC that can handle anything released in the last two decades, and that can emulate everything else.

With all due respect, that's exactly the opposite of what I was saying. I would challenge you to put together a list of PS2 games, which were popular/recognizable, received scores commensurate with the upper echelon of games, and are not on any other home/handheld console, personal computer, or arcade hardware. I would be very surprised if that list reaches double digits, much less triple.
Considering that I can get all the best games for the PS2 on other hardware, or otherwise emulate it, I'm going to take this time to give all of my PS2 games to the nearest homeless person, so that he or she will make use of the games in the only way they properly can be, now: as kindling and toilet paper. After that, I'll take a dump on the console; For all intents and purposes, it's been made totally obsolete, you see. I would encourage everyone to do the same.

Re: There are very few Dreamcast exclusives left...
I may be biased considering my devotion towards the platform, but the system still has exclusives and more importantly still house superior ports that simply don't match up on other consoles. MvC2 is a huge example of this. PS2, XB, 360 PSN ports are inferior, and the latter two which are no longer available for purchase. Jojo's Bizzare Adventure also Springs to mind with similar results.
CvS1, Pro, SF III DOUBLE IMPACT, Project Justice, Plasma Sword, Cannon Spike, Cool Cool Toon, Royal Rumble and many others that have already mentioned.
The system's fine.
