I prefer bad picture quality for old games

Anything that is gaming related that doesn't fit well anywhere else

Doesn't that funk with your transparencies though? Like the shield in Sonic the Hedgehog just turns into a solid white circle instead of a transparent bubble, right?

It shouldn't. I mean, it doesn't turn into a white circle in an emulator, either. I think the "transparency" in many Genesis games is just dithering. It's a lot more grid-like because of the additional sharpness, but it doesn't break it entirely.

(Genesis does have an add/subtract color mode, though, that is sometimes used to do shadows and/or transparencies, I just don't think it was employed much.)

To an extent, stationary captures don't tell the whole story. One isn't going to be paying attention to transparencies when the game is in motion. At living room distance a CRT's glowing scanlines help too.
