It may have less depth than you'd like. It basically plays out like a JRPG with a really really big party of characters.

Some strategy games I've really enjoyed that I don't believe were mentioned yet:

Yeah I tend to gravitate towards the old Japanese stuff...

I know I'm on a forum with some OGs, because the first pick any other forum's members would have chosen would have been:

So how does that one compare to Tactics Ogre?

I bet a I know a tactics game I've beaten that no one else here has. Hell I'd be surprised if anyone here's even played this thing:

Not that you're missing anything.

Since you guys have routinely posted more than one choice, I shall list my top 3:

The hardest SRPG I've ever beaten. Mind blowing depth. Very long game with huge levels and great story. Criminally underrated. Just don't try to play it in real time mode, stick with turn based mode.

Image
The best version of a tremendously fun game. Has the updated graphics of the PS1 port, with a whole new USN (AKA UCS) campaign with its own levels, characters, and plot. Pure giant robot blasting bliss. The optional new USN campaign is legit challenging, unlike the fairly easy main campaign. ALSO the main campaign has nine new hidden missions to find and beat as well. You'll get your money's worth.

Yes it's a cakewalk. But looking past that aspect, this SRPG has so much heart and charm it's impossible not to fall in love with it. A true classic and the number one reason I bought a PS3.
Xeogred wrote:Fallout Tactics | since you mention this one, can I get an Exhum summary on it? Especially in comparison to 1-2 because... brace yourself... I think the gameplay is garbage in the originals. But I know Tactics supposedly plays more like Jagged Alliance or something.

I don't understand how in the world you could think the original Fallouts' gameplay is garbage, but whatever. Tactics does indeed play much more like Jagged Alliance 2 than Fallout. It's basically Fallout themed Jagged Alliance, with wild weapons, crazy enemies, and a great plot. There's lots of random events to encounter on the main map too. Including a legendary encounter with Pipboy. Yes, PIPBOY. You can even have him join your squad.

Freaking awesome SRPG that I can't even begin to describe with justice. It even came with a bunch of PDFs that you could print out a special boardgame with:

PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Bone, what's the last one? I would have guessed Langrisser but it's a SFC game.

Der Langrisser, a remake of Langrisser II.

Bone, excellent picks. Dragon Force is quite a fantastic SRPG with lots of replay value due to the different generals you can play as. And Blazing Heroes/Mystaria/Riglord Saga is actually a very good game, despite the horrible graphics and poor frame rate, mostly because the actual game mechanics are spot on.

I'm also putting Military Madness/Nectaris for the TG16/PCE and Neo Nectaris for PCE SCD high on my list.

My other favorite is Shining Force III. Quite a fantastic title with complex scenarios.

I don't personally like the game play of the first two Fallout games very much, but the lore is so God damn good that it's worth playing through both completely even if you HATED the style.

Point, click, wait to shoot X gun. Repeat.

Get stuck in doors.

Get shot up around corners by Ally AI. Or shot them in the face around corners.

NOT GOOD.

The storytelling and writing is great and all, but the combat is pretty bad and boring. It gets to the point where I'd just rather read a book, which never happens. So I'd rather play something else that's fun to play. I beat 1 but seeing that 2 is supposedly twice as long, I'm not that interested (and I hear 2 isn't as serious or something). Love that Mark Morgan music goodness though.

Anyways yeah, SRPG's.

My friend showed me Valkryia Chronicles back when it was new, it looked amazingly cool with an awesome style on the genre. I'm going to get the PS4 remaster sometime.

Yeah, I noticed the level and enemy design is not very focused but it should still be fun enough to check out.

There's always the Tear Ring Saga! Wish Berwick Saga had a fantranslation, but given not even Thracia 776 has one, it's gonna be tough

I tried the SNES version but I didn't like it very much. The mechanics are fun, but the level design is very generic. I had the feeling it's the kind of game that would be significantly improved by a sequel.

It seems to be the concensus amongst WRPG fans, actually, though there are the ocassional bitter discussions about it.

I've always really enjoyed Supreme Commander and have an extremely obscure obsession with Dark Reign 2 considering it's not exactly fantastic.

I actually have played Onimusha Tactics Exhuminator. I didn't beat it. I found it to be meh and moved on.

Oh and Tactics Ogre and FFT have some similarities. FFT was somewhat of a spiritual successor to TO. The stories, while different, are somewhat similar in style and tone. Delita and Vice serve somewhat similar roles as well. I really like FFT, but the balance is off in it, and you can only have 5 in battle. TO I feel is better balanced, and you can have 10/12 in battle depending on version. This also makes non named characters actually somewhat useful in TO. Named characters in TO, while better, aren't as OP as FFT.

I also played and beat Fallout Tactics. I liked it for what it is, but it had its flaws. Basically I found melee to be really weak, and snipers to be OP. The story was also kinda meh, and it misses out on what Fallout is really about. It was cool recruiting Riddick from Pitch Black as an easter egg, just too bad that he is a melee character lol.
