Donkey Kong Country Returns Tropical Freeze
Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns Tropical Freeze
New SMB U was more or less the only of that new line I've enjoyed. #2 on 3DS is passable but is a bit intentionally coin heavy, but the previous two felt like non-Mario games, very generic and bland with Mario like stickers over stuff to call it a Mario game. It bored me, felt like it had no soul, couldn't even tolerate the Wii one enough to finish that. The one on WiiU felt like they finally got it right as it felt like a more natural extension of old Super Mario World in style and much of the comforts.

I really don't like all this aggressiveness
.
I disagree with the general concensus about this game, and the posts here make me feel that that's considerred a bad thing now.
I always thought that on racketboy we respect different opinions and we don't get aggressive like most gaming forums

Don't let my negative behavior towards tanooki discourage you. I can't stand him and he can't stand me and for the most part we just avoid each other.

ok I get that it's personal, but maybe we should just get back to talking about games?
I'm surprised of the praise nsmb U gets. I also felt the other entries in the series were bland. Now I'm curious to check this one out

My theory is that the previous NSMB games had no identity. They just felt like a cluster without any consistent aesthetic and things like that. Really hard to explain... but NSMB U on the other hand felt like a really nice mashup of elements from SMB, SMB3, SMW all in one, while still feeling like its own thing as well. It felt like classic Mario, but with interesting ideas and cool levels and a good flow. I dunno man haha, it was just WAY better than the previous games to me and the Luigi expansion gimmick is that you only have one minute to get through a level, and it works really well and spices things up.
I'll admit I hated most of the ghost mansion levels though. They all had really weird gimmicks and I got totally stuck on one or two.

I think we all hated the ghost mansion levels in ALL the 2D mario games.
THey did some fun stuff in the 3d mario games though

Amen to that! Every time I get to a boo house, I yell, "BOOOOO HOUSE!" much like in Futurama with, "ROOOOBOT HOUSE!!!!" Those levels drive me crazy!

Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns Tropical Freeze
Donkey Kong Country on SNES is amazing. One of my favorite platformers ever. I never played the two direct sequels or Game Boy spin-offs for some bizarre reason. I'd like to get to them eventually.
Hated Donkey Kong 64. Hated Returns. Never played that bongo shit on GameCube because it looked dumb and I hate giant gaudy accessories.
I first played Tropical Freeze shortly after I acquired a Wii U, when all I had was the standard gamepad controller. I didn't care for the way it controlled - it felt like the controller was too big and bulky for a game that requires such quick and precise button presses. I have since purchased the "regular controller" (pro controller? I can't remember what it's called) so I'm willing to give it another chance.
Oh, and every 2D Mario game is boss, the Wii and Wii U installments included.

Ditto! This is why I was so disappointed... that and with NSMB being a bit more retro infused in the SMB1 vein, they just felt out of place to me. Much too abundant too. Ugh yeah, just thinking about them annoys me. But I really enjoy those levels and the music in SMW.
