Nintendo has been getting better and better over the years. I hope his successor has the leadership, insight, and balls that guided the company under his tenure. (I nominate Miyamoto.)

Terrible news, so sudden. As ever, you only know these people from a distance but his obvious love of gaming and passion to spread it beyond its traditional fanbase was something to really admire. He will be missed I'm sure.

I had heard he had been dealing with health problems, but I thought he was getting better. Obviously, that was not the case...

He always looked fun and inviting. There are a very small amount of people like him in the world much less the video game industry. If more people were like him, the world would be a better place.

After reading about him, his days as a programmer were really impressive.

By the time Iwata stood up in Tokyo in September 2005 to announce that the company's next home console would be a diminutive white box with a motion controller that looked more like a simplified TV remote control for elderly people than a joypad, absolutely nobody was poking fun. Lots of people didn't get it; years later, there are plenty of core gamers who still don't understand the appeal of the Wii and who rail against it as an example of Nintendo losing its way, but naysayers were too busy picking the egg off their faces after the DS reveal to have any desire to second-guess Nintendo again.

Thank God, that needed to be said.
