I think we can almost guarantee that Mario Maker will be involved for the reasons you already mentioned. In fact they may have come up with this whole thing specifically for Mario Maker now that I'm thinking about it.

Shareholders should run companies, but only large institutional investors (like a pension fund) have the clout to force any changes. Indirect and small investors - like you and me - don't have any real say in the company's management (which, honestly, is probably for the best in most cases), and we can only voice our disapproval of a company's direction by voting with our feet (i.e., transferring our funds to a different investment).
