Man there are a lot of DS entries. In no particular order:

Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Rune Factory 3: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon
Harvest Moon DS: Sunshine Islands
Harvest Moon: Frantic Farming
Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns
Harvest Moon DS: Grand Bazaar
Harvest Moon DS
Harvest Moon DS: Island of Happiness
Harvest Moon DS Cute
Puzzle de Harvest Moon

I think that's all of them? Anybody play any of these? Opinions?

Ironically, every game that has "Harvest Moon" in the title on that list I found fairly mediocre. Again if you have a 3DS I can't possibly recommend A New Beginning enough.

I wanted to love Harvest Moon DS so much for it's integration with Friends of Mineral Town, but the execution just left me sad.

So you tried all eleven of those games and all of them were mediocre?

I'll pick up A New Beginning on your rec though.

No the Rune Factory games are great from what I played, I meant the HM games specifically.

Harvest Moon DS and DS Cute are the same game (Like FoMT and MFoMT) and they just felt like sluggish, shallow versions of Mineral Town. Island of Happiness and Grand Bazaar are hard for me to really consider Harvest Moon games personally. I mean the aspects are there, but the tone is completely different and the ideas didn't really feel very fleshed out to me. Then the puzzle game, I mean, if you're into that kind of game I guess, but it's not proper Harvest Moon.

I really need to look into the rune factory ones, but hometown story is interesting to say the least even if i've no clue what I'm doing and keep getting lost(not a big fanof the 3d ones for that exact matter I get lost in 3d environments way too easily......I think there's a general reason I usually avoid them with other games

I have played Harvest Moon DS and spent a lot of time playing the title. It is actually a lot better than people say it is, but in a very different way than what makes Animal Parade fun. Harvest Moon DS is very heavily Harvest Moon and features tons of stuff that is hidden. There is a huge focus on harvesting and planting, with various plots of lands that have various levels of fertility where you can plant and grow things, as well as numerous mines that have varying levels of depth. These mines can be vary action oriented, with lots of obstacles and enemies that you have to avoid or battle... yes battle, as eventually you can unlock a very interesting storyline that plays out through the mines.

There is a lot to unlock and upgrade your house with and there is plenty of customizability of your farm. Things like TV have unlockable shows that offer new features and there are tons of elves to find and save by performing various actions like fishing, mining, clearing weeds etc. There are elves that can also offer touch screen mni-games in a casino style area that offers you unique and interesting items to shake things up. A lot of times, those items only appear as you use the casino more and more and buy more and more items and they can really alter how you play the game for better or for worse. Some people hate the mini-games, but I felt they are fun to do when I had a few minutes here and there.

There are mini-games that you can use when brushing, milking or clipping the wool form your animals as well, but not mandatory. These minigames usually involve using the touch screen to stroke/milk/cut the wool, and certain animals have various hotspots that make things better or worse for you. Again, they aren't mandatory but can give you a larger boost in your animals happiness.

There are tons of events and tons of character to interact with and many activities that have mini-games in them. You can even have relationships and kids with the major characters, the Witch or the Harvest Goddess, which is a bit crazy!

Overall, the game is as good as the time you put into it. There is a ton of hidden events and activities that you can explore and find. At first glance, the game seems like a simple Harvest Moon game and can seem superficial. It isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it a lot. My wife, who is the big harvest moon fan, did not as she found it a bit too difficult compared to other Harvest Moon games.

As for Rune Factory, I could never get into the series. I always felt pressured by the time and could never manage it properly with all the things you could do. It just never appealed to me. Not to say it is bad, but I just felt overwhelmed and games with ticking clocks always get to me. That is why I dislike the Harvest Moon games that have the time still ticking even when inside buildings. Drives me crazy.

I've always been really interested in HM:DS, but never got around to getting a DS, so I could never try it.

Now, I don't know about some of the newer 3DS games, but as far as console games go, I think a lot got lost starting with Animal Parade. For one, the art style is almost too cutesy in my eyes. Speaking of which, the way the eyes looked were a big factor for me. It makes me think of some kind of doll or something. The biggest thing for me though was a shift to the games being much more heavy with the social aspects at the expense of farming aspects. It wasn't too profound in Animal Parade, but it got worse after that point. I always liked HM for the farming, marriage was second, and I usually hardly cared for other characters around unless they were really interesting.

You would really enjoy Harvest Moon DS. Is has a very heavy focus on farming and mining.

Wasn't Animal Parade the last "Harvest Moon" made for consoles though? I thought that was the last one before they moved exclusively to handhelds...

The art didn't bother me. It seemed like a nice compromise between the (even cutesier) Magical Melody and something like A Wonderful Life. I agree with the social aspects though, which is why I tend to prefer Magical Melody for the console. You can just run and expand your farm all day long.

You can do the same in Animal Parade. There are various plots of land that you can purchase, as well as use things like the windmill to refine certain crop materials. I felt like it had a lot of farming potential for those that were interested in it. Sure there is a big focus on social aspects, but there is a big focus on farming, mining and essentially anything that a person wants to focus on. It has a nice balance because of that and can appeal to the various types of players.

I did like Animal Parade, and plan on picking up a physical copy eventually and trying it again. I think I only got the first, maybe the second bell.

Sometimes I just miss the "Here's your farm, don't screw it up!" simplicity. But that's what I have FoMT for!
