Better Call Saul Season One Starts Tonight
Re: Better Call Saul Season One Starts Tonight
Really enjoying the show thus far. I do agree that they need to take their foot off the gas in regards to cameos. The show feels like it can be great in its own right, if they allow it to and don't over flood it with "THIS IS FROM BREAKING BAD!" every 5 minutes.

It's not bad, but at two episodes in Breaking Bad was better than where this show is right now.
The desert scene was a bit overdone and got kind of silly after a while.
BB was firing on all cyclinders right out of the gate. BCS isn't.

I rather like watching Saul's "conversion". It is cool to see he was a bit of a con man when he was younger, grew out of it and went straight and now I look forward to watching him turn.Gamerforlife wrote:It's not bad, but at two episodes in Breaking Bad was better than where this show is right now.

The life of a drug lord vs a lawyer who doesn't generally like to get his hands dirty, I can see it being far more timid.
I agree about the desert scene, got stupid fast.

If I was forced to judge whether or not I would continue watching this based on the two available episodes, I'd say no. There's no immediate hook. Saul is just not an interesting enough character to carry an entire show. There have been funny, dark lawyer shows before...eh. I'll watch one or two more and see how it goes.
That desert scene is one of the stupidest things I've seen on TV for a while...heck, everything from the point where the kids follow the car home. It's trying too hard to be edgy.
Re: Better Call Saul Season One Starts Tonight
Honestly I thought a good amount of the first season of Breaking Bad wasn't as good as what the show became. If I didn't hear super-interesting (and kind of spoiler-filled) interviews about how characters developed in later seasons I probably wouldn't have ever bothered with the show.
As for Better Call Saul's episode two "desert scene" I'd agree that it was super-silly but I thought the comedy of it worked really well in a ham-fisted kind of way that appeals to me. The show can't be as tragedy-focused as Breaking Bad because we already know Saul ends up with his super-successful/super-sleazy law firm by the end. Unless they want to explore more of his post-Breaking Bad life in future episodes, which they totally might!

I personally liked the desert scene, and I like Saul as a character. Maybe its just because I find him relatable, I'm not really sure.

I liked the desert scene but did feel that it went on maybe a bit too long. I did look at the clock though and think, "man, these guys have created thirty minutes of above average entertainment using only two locations".
Re: Better Call Saul Season One Starts Tonight
Three cameos in two episodes (possibly more that I didn't catch).
Loving it anyway as Bob shows a lot of range even though the show is a bit formulaic.

Three? Tuco, Mike, and who else?
Mike is not a cameo, you know. He's gonna be a character in the series, he didn't just have a cameo appearance in the parking booth. He's reprising his role. It's not even a stretch. They were already acquainted in BB (and IIRC that's how Walter met Saul) so it's only natural to have Mike in the Saul series, at least some where at some point. His appearance in the booth might seem like he's just a cheesed out cameo in a comedic roll, but I'm certain they're setting up something. Establishing how Saul and Mike came to know each other. Something Breaking Bad was always great at doing was setting things up.
I admit though, Tuco felt more like "Hey, there's Tuco!!1!" Like they just put him in there for the sake of it, "SEE, THIS IS BREAKING BAD!!!" But, Tuco is connected to Gus. Mike eventually works for Gus, if he doesn't already in some capacity, but I'm assuming not yet because he's in a parking attendant's booth. Maybe Mike comes to work for Gus through Saul? Something stemming from the Tuco incident? We already know that Saul isn't done with those people because of how the second episode ended.

The Mexican that reaches out to Saul is the same one that Tuco beats the ever-living snot out of in BB.Ziggy587 wrote:Three? Tuco, Mike, and who else?
And I probably should have worded it is "Borrowed characters" instead "cameos".
