Seriously guys, why didn't you shine the S&K signal in the sky when you started this Sonic discussion?

Anyway long story short: Modern Sonic is shit.

Even the "good" games everyone mentions, are average at best

Sonic Generations was probably the best one, but it also failed to make me want to it play again since the platforming was kind of limited, and it was more about running and avoiding obstacles instead of calculating jumps.

Sonic Lost Worlds had the most potential, but it definetly needed another 6 months of development spent on level design.

The story book series is just....aweful.

The DS games are ok, but they aren't really about platforming, they are more about running and pressing the boost button at the right time to break through obstacles. Also Rush Adventure had those HORRIBLE mandatory boat mini games

But I DID enjoy Sonic Rush probably the most out of all these games, so check that out. (also it has some really funky tunes :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMeafEWN2jo )

I think Jim Sterling makes great points on this topic:

Lastly, I know I've plugged the shit out of this game, and it's not exactly a Sonic game (nor does it play as much as a Sonic game as it looks in the trailer), but SERIOUSLY check out Freedom Planet if you like Sonic

There's a free demo on their site ;)

Not a huge fan of Sonic Rush but the music is done by the JSR guy so that's pretty much fantastic.

Sega should just keep Sonic in 2D form and strictly have Dimps create the games. Dimps developed the 3 Sonic Advance games, the two DS Rush games and the DS Colors, Sonic 4, and a couple others that were good.

In other words they have a proven track record.

A proven track record of starting amazing (Sonic Advance 1) and going downhill from there, just like Sonic Team  .

Though I guess both Sonic Rush games were better than Sonic Advance 3 and its bloated levels and partner mechanism.

I've always been a pretty big Sonic fan, but until recently I hadn't played anything post Secret Rings. Then I got Sonic Generations, which might be my new favorite Sonic game.
I still need to get Colors though. Which version is better, DS or Wii. Are they b oth worth getting?
Insert clever quote here.

Despite their shared title, they are almost completely different games. One is a great, fast-paced 3D platformer, and the other is a traditional "Sonic" 2D platformer. (Sonic Colors is basically Sonic Rush 3...or Sonic Advance 6.) Both are worth purchasing.

On a general note, am I the only one that is extremely put off by this newer Sonic? Specifically that he talks and usually sounds like a spunky 10 year old. I was watching a trailer sometime in the past year (Sonic Boom? no idea) and the whole time I just kept thinking "Why is Sonic talking.....please Sonic, stop talking"

I'm fine with a smirk and a "Hmph!" here and there but I hate Sonic as a character every time he utters a sentence, and I loved Sonic in his heyday.

Now this brings up one of the biggest problems I have with a lot of the modern sonic games. Sega seems to have it in their brain that they need to make a story for the Sonic games. What made Sonic 1-S&K so great was the fact that they told a very simple story with no words at all. We got the point and we knew what we needed to do. They really need to take a note from Mario who only says a few words and they never move the plot forward.

Yeah good points and it also speaks to the general clutter that started occupying Sonic games that mystifies me to this day. Ever since Sonic Adventure. First level: "Wow! Sonic in 3D! This is awesome!" Later on: "What is all this other stuff? Why can't I just run somewhere really fast? Who are these characters?"
