Intervention time!
Boy, they certainly are counting hairs when they think 6.6mm really equates to a larger screen.

The announcement was... unexpected.
Even with the incremental revision I still wouldn't buy it. I have plenty of games that run on my 3DS XL and all of my future game purchases are able to run on the hardware I already own.
The only thing that will push me over the edge will be a new Pokemon game from the main series. But since the inevitably of the third "middle version" will use the same engine as X, Y, Ruby, and Sapphire you can count me out as an owner of this "New" nonsense.

I don't care if a feature-deprived version of something comes out because the option already existed to buy a top-of-the line model and those models still exist. The last Wii revision is a POS compared to the original unit, but I don't care because I had already purchased the better version. I felt the same way about PS2 compatibility being removed from the PS3: I didn't care b/c I had a BC model. The 2DS didn't irritate me because it, again, was a budget-conscious downgraded model that was unappealing for those reasons.
This is different because it punishes people who waited for the "inevitable" XL model of the 3DS by releasing something even better yet. Like I said, I and (almost everyone else, I think) foolishly expected the 3DS XL to be the best version of that handheld series, so I suppose it is my own fault. I don't have to be "happy" about it, though.

I just thought of something I didn't in my other post -- Wii U.
That system, let's be honest, is failing and I really wish it wasn't as I paid up for one when it first came out. With these added sticks and buttons and the beefier hardware, I could see this being the tipping point where some stuff that system gets, or would have got could end up as 'exclusive' to the New 3DS system. If they're doing it with Xenoblade, there's really no reason to think they wouldn't try and bring over some other stuff from the Wii U, not just the Wii or other last gen systems and modern android/gamepad type stuff too.

The only thing I've read about the New 3DS so far that sounds great, is the eye tracking that helps keep the 3D sweet spot in full effect.
Chances are there will only be a handful of New 3DS exclusive games released. I think publishers know the existing 3DS user base is too large to just outright bypass. We will likely see 3DS games released with optional New 3DS enhancements, like we did with the "DSi-Enhanced" carts years ago.

Nintendo is just pulling the Apple strategy, a newer model to purchase all over and over again. The only advantage of this is the older model will drop in price for us cheap bastards. My kids have the 3DS XL, and here I am still debating to upgrade from a GBA SP to the DSI.

I get the anger here, but it's not like Nintendo didn't do this before. Gameboy was around from 1989 through 2003, but in that time, the Gameboy was effectively trumped back in 1998 by the Gameboy Color. With the GBC came the black carts (works on the old) and the charcoal see through GBC only games. They're doing it again with the 3DS. It's a new, but not a new piece of hardware that happens to share a name and use the older games but will have some unique. This isn't the little step of the DSi, this is a bigger step and as such they'll end up dragging the life of the 3DS on the whole out a few years longer than it would otherwise (GBC was alone from 1998-01 then died in 03.)

Punished? It's video games. Buy it if you want. Don't buy it if you don't.

At least Apple has the common sense to use a numerical naming convention for each upgraded iteration.
