I'm surprised so many people are praising this. What it looks like to me is instead of making a brand new UT, their gonna do a bare minimum amount of work then leave it to other people do the work for them then make money off that content.

It could wind up like that. I think though, that it's a logical approach if they're trying to recreate the kind of stuff we saw in the genre during the original's heyday.

Consider how many mods became standard modes. Capture the Flag wasn't part of Quake, it was a mod (Threewave). Team Fortress was a mod, Action Quake 2 is a logical forerunner to Counter-Strike, which again, mod.
Quite a lot of the time I played UT online, it was lowgrav, instagib, in custom levels designed for launching players across the map.

If the goal is to get that kind of effort being put forth, with greater work that today's graphics, AI, physics, and so on would take...hosting a marketplace like they've presented makes sense. It's not just Epic pulling in cash, it's the modders as well.

Historically speaking, you want people modding in this genre. It's been a huge factor in its evolution. If paying them is what will get that going, and Epic wants to give the game away instead, so that users will be more likely to buy mods, then maybe it's worth giving a chance.

When I played UT, I only used a custom skin that looked like a teddy bear. I want the days when folks could throw together junk like that and have a good time with it. Folks do this stuff for a variety of reasons, but some of it are doing it solely to build experience, for notoriety, or for fun. Sure, some of these guys are likely going to try to sell this stuff. But quite a few of them are going to just give it away for free too.

Other mods that first appeared in a UT: Red Orchestra, Killing Floor, The Ball, Tactical Ops, etc.

I was pretty serious into the original UT99 instagib scene. I was in clans and competing. It was one of the most memorable gaming experiences I've ever had. When they moved onto the 2k series the game moved away from that competitive fast action core and introduced huge maps and vehicles. Sure it was fun but for me thats not what UT is about. Over the years arena fps has really suffered. There is always the old games but as far as new releases I'm not familiar with much outside of indie games.

I'd love to see a return to Unreal Tournament's roots. Get back to fast paced action packed reflex based fps with smaller maps.

This video is one of the best at capturing what made instagib in UT so awesome:
