If you can, have them run cat6 cable through the walls and terminate that in a couple rooms, or atleast a closet on the top floor for a repeater.

Hardwired cat6 will serve you well for many many years.

I tried! The GC doesn't run network cables. He let me pick locations for: normal 110v outlets, outlets on dedicated breakers, security wiring (including windows), coax, & conduit. A lot more customization than most. I offered to run cat6 but he can't allow it due to his insurance regs.

For now I'll have a small network in my upstairs game room & enterprise level WiFi for downstairs (probably using Ruckus R300 WAP). Eventually I'll wire the home with cat6. Attics a bit too warm in Houston. My security "demarc" box is in a closet. Will eventually become an IT hub but for now I'll prob have an 8 port switch in my game room. Benefit of working for an IT integration company now is that I've receive the green light to order my own gear at cost, typically ~40% off MSRP.

What, that's crap that they won't run it for you. Will they at least run some extra empty boxes for you so that you can drop cable yourself after and not have to mess up the sheetrock work?

Can he run spare conduit to an empty 1 gang? Or can he run "cat3" for telephony and it really be cat6?

Yeah, it's not ideal but I knew up front before I signed the construction contract. I got a great deal on the house bc its a canned floor plan with very specific upgradable areas (less variation = lower costs = lower buyer prices). The savings I got upfront & at my $ per sq ft rate, I had no issues setting up a mini network off the router for now & wiring later to locations I really need later. I'll likely put in a dual coax & cat6 box in a few rooms.

Nah, cat 3 was $55 an outlet IIRC & they couldn't substitute out cables. No 66 blocks needed ;)

Would've been a downfall if I found out late in the process but they were very transparent, provided a very detailed scope of work, & most importantly offered the best prices I found. Can't complain :)

Well atleast you knew going into it. If you have access to a wallfish it will take you a day at best to do it.
