Aidyn Chronicles didn't even make the list. And I actually rather enjoy the simplicity of Quest 64, but it ended up being number 4. They thought Shadow Madness and Beyond the Beyond were worse.
X-Play is clueless as always.

Lagoon is a decent game. As far as Ys-y games go, it's one of the better ones.

And I'll take Shadow Madness, Beyond the Beyond, and Quest 64 over bloated sub-mediocre poop like Final Fantasy XIII.

Is this the thread where everyone hipsters-out and tries their hardest to omit Chrono Trigger and FF6(3) because that's what those people do? :P (I jest)

Anyhoo, my honest top 5 "RPGs":

5. Chrono Trigger- I loved it, the game did a ton for my imagination and was the first really alerted my conscience to the JRPG difference in the 'RPG' genres. I have nothing but fond memories of it and believe everyone who has never really experienced an 'old school' RPG should definitely give this a once over.

4. Vagrant Story- Not sure why this game got shit on so hard (aside from literally having the color palette to LOOK like it was shit on :P ) But I found the characters interesting, the battle system fun and the story was well-thought out. I always viewed this as a gem and recommend it to many.

3. Valkyrie Profile- Played this game a ton in my college years. Loved the characters, story and dungeon speed running became my obsession for a long while.

2. Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic- This game was amazing to me, addicted me like none before. I must have played through 8 different characters before I could put it down. The character interactions, open-world feel, dialogue and exploration was amazing. Of course, i managed to avoid spoilers and the TWIST really rocked me the first time, such an amazing experience overall.

1. Mass Effect Trilogy- Like KotOR, Bioware really tapped into what I enjoy out of 'RPGs'. Superdiverse options, rich story and dialogue, fun upgrading of weapons and skill (at least in 1). The character interactions and dialogue was top notch. Music amazing. Effort put into the alien world and races really set this apart from all other 'RPG' games for me. Sure the ending to 3 sucked donkey balls, but the real ending for me was just before that anyways (for my Paragon at least)...
the sequence when everyone and every race you ever assisted and allied with; they all show up to protect the Normandy on it's fateful run through the Reaper blockade to Earth; One by one each fleet and ship checks in (even the Destiny Ascension!), all there to return the favors that Sheppard and her crew did the galaxy, sacrificing themselves for the greater good and just for a CHANCE that life in the universe will persist.
That sequence is what I worked for in those 3 games, and I felt the story writers at least got that part right and did the player a solid.
Anyways, it's not always about the ending. The journey to get there was an amazing gaming and cinematic experience, and I enjoyed the hell out of it multiple times.

I really don't see the point in what you're getting at, though. This is supposed to be your personal top 5 RPGs, not what the consensus says are the top 5. Just because someone isn't as big a fan of FFVI or Chrono Trigger it doesn't mean they aren't being "honest" (and most Japanese consensus top 5's would rank Dragon Quest games above them anyway). I could sit here and tear down FFVI and why I didn't care for it as much, but why bother? I'd much rather see a game I forgot about and say "Oh yeah, maybe that deserves another look, thanks man." than criticize someone else's list.

Uh oh, someone quoted me out of context, ah yes, the good ol' days of message boarding...

The Chrono Trigger statement was just me chiding everyone that had posted so far, I think because no one had even mentioned CT yet. While I can certainly believe it will not be on someone's top 5 list for totally legit reasons/opinions... I can also believe that people will try and stay away from popular picks because posting on 'top lists' of any kind is all about standing out/ being unique etc.

For the record, I don't truly believe anyone is doing that, hence the "(I jest)" and emoticon spam...

The bottom quote that you pasted with my other one- was more chiding about me picking a current gen RPG game and making it my top, rather than harkening to the RPGs of old (on a retro board). The "come at me", should be taken as "please comment on my picks, I wish to converse about it and defend it as my number one pick!"...

otherwise... like you not "seeing the point" of my post, I don't "see the point" of a thread like this, if we can't joke around and playfully argue over opinions...

... lots of ellipses here... hmmmm.

Damn you cha cha, I was fully prepared to crucify you for picking Chrono Trigger.... and then I saw Vagrant Story on your list.

Well played.

Ouch! I actually liked Star Ocean. :P

I guess I'll make a list with actual games on it:

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
The Last Story
Persona 4
Dark Souls
Shadow Hearts II

Eh, less interesting than my troll list. I need to play more RPGs.

Lagoon and Aidyn Chronicles I liked, so screw X-Play. Never actually played Quest 64, though it probably doesn't deserve the reputation it gets either. There are so many worse RPGs that I could have put there instead.
Or I could have made a top 1 RPGs of all time consisting solely of Secret of the Stars.

Loving the revival of the top 5 lists.

RPG's have been one of my weakest genres since my early 20's. Loved 'em when I was a kid and had all the time in the world - stopped being able to stand them once I got a job and time suddenly was in finite supply. So my list will be pretty damn dated and insanely Square-centric:

5. Final Fantasy Legends III (Saga 3) - Gameboy
4. Secret of Evermore - SNES
3. Secret of Mana - SNES
2. Final Fantasy VI - SNES
1. Chrono Cross - PSX
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

The X-Play video sucked because there was no thought put into it. Like most of their content.

It's as if they simply Google searched to find games with a poor reputation and just went with it.

Back the actual topic..... I'd have a tough time picking top five. My "holy trinity" is Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and EarthBound. I'm not sure what would occupy slots 4 and 5. Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia, Ogre Battle 64, Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys, Betrayal at Krondor, and Arcanum are all strong contenders.

Oh and Final Fantasy Mystic Quest kicks ass. Haters gonna hate.
