I managed to swing by my favorite game store yesterday to pick up a copy.

I'm in I wanna import my saves over to II when I'm done. I never played suikoden I but obtained 103 stars in suikoden II.

Ogre Battle was a little too intimidating for me to jump in. I think I'll try out Suikoden though, looks pretty cool.

Think I might start this one a few days early. Been meaning to dive into an old school RPG, and might as well tryout a new series.

Yeah I am gonna start playing this Sunday night on my stream to get a head start so if anyone who doesn't have the time to play it or wants to just talk about the genre in general, stop on by!

I'm going to be starting on this today, as I have today and tomorrow off, and I've been champing at the bit to play this again as it is. Depending on how well I remember how to recruit all the SoDs, I might even be finishing it before the eleventh, but we'll see. (Clive is usually a crap shoot. It'll mostly depend on how cooperative he'll be, I suppose. Also, I think the Saturn version changes Marco's cup game to something less abuse-able. That might hamper my early game weapon forging.)

Are you going to be playing the Saturn version then? I've always wanted to do that. I own it, but unfortunately don't speak a lick of Japanese :(. For anyone else thinking about doing this, the Saturn version does have some noticeable changes. For a detailed comparison, Raww Le Klueze has written a guide between it and the PSX version:
http://www.suikosource.com/games/gs1/indepth/saturn.php

Also the PSP port as well:
http://www.suikosource.com/games/gs2/indepth/psp.php

For anyone playing the NA version on PSX, just a heads up for those not in the know. There is a save transfer feature between this game and Suikoden II. If you plan on playing Suikoden II sometime in the future and want to make use of this feature, it is essential to get all characters and save at a certain place near the end of the game.

There is also one bug that some of you might want to be aware of. There is a non-game breaking bug with the naming scheme when transferring your Suikoden I save to Suikoden II. It's only present in the NA version I believe, but one way to get around it is to name your main character in Suikoden I using all lower case letters (ie winds). I won't detail it further to avoid some spoilers. If you plan on only playing Suikoden and not using the transfer feature, then this bug is moot.

I am. I'm at the save just before fighting Sydonia and Varkas, right now, and it seems like the visuals are a bit more crisp overall, but, oh my god, the loading times! Seems there aren't any transitions between battles (just abrupt, black screens) and no loading screens with Gremio, Ted, etc running in place to break up certain town transitions, and transitions from towns to the overworld map; That may be unnecessarily emphasizing the load times, but they feel extreme. I might lose it, and just start playing the JP PS1 version instead once I need to recruit Crowley or something.

Otherwise, playing the Japanese version is pretty nice.
I feel like I get a much better sense of "Tir"'s status, and it seems like it sets up the eventual fall from grace, and disgrace in running around with an uncouth bear like Viktor, much better in comparison to the translated script. Right from the opening, also, there's a guard outside of Barbarossa's throne room who almost slips, and lets out his country dialect. It's a pretty common trope, but it's always one of those things that doesn't translate particularly well. I can't remember what he says in the western versions, but I feel like he just says what the other guard does; meaning, they didn't even touch it. Honestly, that's probably the better move, but these are the kinds of things that make me prefer playing games with their original scripts.

I had no idea there was a way around this. That is very cool information.
