I'm a big fan of the Longsword myself, though I like to use Sword and Shield for the really speedy bosses.

I have been playing around with the Insect Glaive some. I like the concept but I find it very difficult to actually get the little bug to hit the monster most of the time. I haven't played around much with the Charge Blade (sword/shield that switches to axe) much yet.

Also, I have only managed to make it onto the back of a monster ONE time and that was entirely by accident.

I am ~15 hours in and am having a blast with the game. Monster Hunter is one of my favorite franchises.

This is really easy to accomplish and you should take a couple of minutes practicing the maneuver on a Great Jaggi or something.

Here's how to do it in case you or anyone else needs help.

In order to ride on a monster:
-Find ledge.
-Jump off ledge towards monster
-Hit the attack button ('X', I think) in mid-air; this performs a jumping attack.
-If it works, you'll ride the monster and you'll have the opportunity to topple them.
-If it doesn't work you at least get a hit on them.

While riding, a bar appears. The objective is to stab the monster until the bar fills up (stab with X). You should only strike when the monster icon on the bar is green. When the icon turns red, hold down R until the icon turns green again, stab, repeat.

If you do it right the monster will topple and you get a brief opportunity to wail on them.

Once you have it figured out, you can almost topple any monster at will. It makes fights soooo much easier!

So how is everyone progressing?
I beat Shagaru Magala this morning. An interesting fight due to the arena you fight him in. The environment doesn't offer a lot of breathing/hiding room. Thankfully I brought a couple of cats to keep him occupied whilst I ran away and healed/sharpened.

Onward to more challenging fights I suppose.
