Joining the choir of anti-FB here. Semi-OT but hey, where the heck is this topic gonna go from here anyways?
Never had an account on FB, and what actually bothers me most is that a LOT of VG forums/online communities I 'used' to be a part of have no almost completely shifted to using FB as their primary 'forums for discussion' completely cutting out those of us who do not wish to be subjected to it. Really irritating trend, I hate the laziness FB breeds in communication overall.

I use Facebook to keep in touch with people. Sometimes I'll look at the ridiculous things people posted, shake my head, and move on with my life.

Facebook is just an outlet for people to use. The content you see or read is up to that individual person, not Facebook. If it really annoys you that much, just cut your friends' list down to people you like.cha cha wrote:Joining the choir of anti-FB here. I think it's great to keep up with people and talk to people you wouldn't otherwise have a chance to talk to on a regular basis.
And I don't think using Facebook for discussion is about laziness, I think it's about cheapness. The less you have to host to a server, the less you have to pay for and Facebook is free.

If it really annoys me that much, how about not use it? It's hard to cut down a friends list when you are talking about joining facebook groups. Thus having to sort through all of that "group's" assorted and unwanted spam posts and various idiocracy to find whatever it is you were wanting to talk about.BurningDoom wrote:

Besides why sign up for a service that I need to do a bunch of heavy-handed modifications on just to get it to work the way I want, when I already have so many ways to communicate with people?
I don't think i can count reading someone's status updates and wall posts directed to everyone in general as "keeping up" with them, that's more like keeping tabs on them. If you bring up the point of a private convo or private message on FB, why not just email, pm on forum or text someone? FB is not needed to have a private message with someone.
The laziness of FB users commonly comes in the form of stuff posted on their wall and expecting anyone "who cares" to read it, then just assuming their intended audience DID. Instead of, I dunno, taking the time to message someone in the thousand other forms of communication that existed before FB.
So it leads to BS like "hey man, I thought we were gonna be at SoandSo's crib for the game" and they respond like "oh man, venue change, I posted it on my wall bro, didn't you see?" Instead of taking time to text like 3-4 people. Or call them. Or <insert webchat client here> them. Or email them or you know... talk to them.
I KNOW this comes down to specific individuals when slinging around terms like 'laziness' and not everyone is like that, but it has turned a lot of people I 'used to know' into lazy, just post on FB and if someone doesn't see it 'oh wellz'- types and I found it offensive.
The plus side is I have a hell of a lot less 'acquaintances' that bother me with inane "what uppppp" now...
...and to the point being made about cost/space saving- all the forums, listservs and various other 'groups' to which I belonged, still have their sites and are still maintained fully. There is no costs being saved and no places shutting down in lieu of FB being the better alternative, so I view that as a poor point.
