Did you ever bought a game for its graphics & regretted it?

Heavenly Sword. I bought it for the graphics and HATED it. I know that I'm kind of alone on this as it was a highly regarded game. But, I thought it was terrible.

RE Remake: Bought it because the graphics were gorgeous, loved it because it was an amazing game.

There have been many, many others. But, I have since learned my lesson.

Bought Crysis in 2007 for PC because it had pretty much the best graphics at the time, the gameplay was mediocre at best, but the Graphics omg, so good in 2007, and still hold true today imo.

It's still fairly good looking, and the game does a decent job (in some parts) of providing an illusion of freedom. Main thing I didn't like, gameplay-wise, is it basically wound up doing the same thing every other Crytek game has - (semi) interesting combat against humans, which then turns into fighting non-humans that most of the tactics are useless against. I wouldn't be surprised if Ryse has you fighting mutated lions or something for half the game.

With how cheap it can be these days, might as well give it a whirl. It was also ported to the PS3 and 360 using the engine from Crysis 2 (digital download only, and no multiplayer, expansions, etc).

If the only thing with it is the graphics, then yeah, there are better looking titles out there now, or at least far better optimized ones.

This is very out of topic, but I heard when Crysis was released there wasn't a PC on the market to play it in its full capability producing the common joke on the internet "But will it play Crysis?"

Yes. Main thing to consider with a lot of PC games like that is that the bar for good performance is always rising. So a new crop of video cards comes out, and they're no longer shooting for 1024x768 performance, but 1680x1050, then 1080 or 1200p, now a lot of reviews are doing 1440/1600p.

Crysis (and Metro 2033, and the STALKER series, and so on) tend to consistently be ones that are difficult to get that solid 60fps out of when maxed out at the "current" resolution, even as old as they are. Meanwhile other engines might get 25-30fps more out of the same hardware.

That was a HUGE meme a few years ago. Everytime a new GPU hit the market, the comments/forum would be flooded with "Yeah, but can it run Crysis?". It was ridiculous. Funny, but ridiculous. I even remember a funny video a member of the Anandtech forums made where he said something along the lines of: "My PC runs Crysis so fast, it SKIPS frames!"

Has that PC come along yet?

I just fiddled around with the demo released shortly after the game's release and I was able to run the game at 1920x1080 with Very High settings all around at ~40 FPS. Since my hardware isn't the best around (AMD Phenom II X6, Radeon 6950, 8GB RAM) and (I'm assuming) the game's been optimized somewhat in the past five years, I'd say that PC has come.

That would be a pretty heavy handed no. Even as a kid I can't recall a single moment that I had to have a game because it looked technically impressive. The same goes with art style, although I guess it's worth noting I place art style above "graphics". Even so, not enough to ever base a purchase solely on it.

Still, I am guilty of similarly foolish things. I frequently buy games from developers that I have come to trust without doing proper research. It takes a lot for me to trust a developer to just blindly buy their games, but times I have done so and regretted it would include Shadows of the Damned, MadWorld, and Final Fantasy X-2. Probably a few more, but those ones stung hard.

Oh well, there are worse things that can happen than buying a game and regretting it.

I've never bought a game for it's graphics. Though, ironically, I plan to do something sort of like that pretty soon. I'm building my own high end gaming rig, and to sort of "break it in" so to speak I plan on buying a few graphically intensive games over the upcoming Steam sales that will inevitably pop up in either Halloween, thanks giving, or Christmas. Things like Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, Crysis, Metro: Last Light. All of them are games that look good on their own merits for one reason or another, but as an added bonus I'll be able to get a nice ego boost from being able to play them on max settings with a solid framerate.
