Your response is like someone attacking Dish for saying "Comic book movies suck, but I haven't watched every comic book movie".
Yup. In my experience, that I would not call limited, people who think they brew great beer are brewing crap.

Re: Beer Homebrewing thread
I can't stand domestic beer besides Sam Adams especially Coors. They taste like shit.
Re: Beer Homebrewing thread
Seriously though, what does Luke think he's going to achieve by coming into a homebrewing thread and basically calling homebrewers talentless and actively discourage people from taking up the hobby because it's a waste of time...MrPopo wrote: Methinks Niode is slowly turning into a soccer hooligan.
It's like going on to stackexchange and saying "all these homebrew games/programs people make for free suck ass, you do realise you can go to a store and buy professionally made software that is way better, even the really shit games you can buy are better than this crap that people make in their bedroom". What a fucking pointless argument...

No says I and with you not giving any insight to the OP I take umbrage. Umbrage I say to your foul mouthed posts!Niode wrote:Troll, please leave.
Not sure why you're so unhunky-dorey that I've never had a decent homebrew. Not sure why you don't provide questions of why I haven't had a good one or why you haven't said "The chocolate stout probably tasted bad because XXXX..." I prefer mass manufactured beer like Sam Adams over most craft and homemade beards*.
Not "trolling", not looking to grab new things, but I would like to know who has made a decent beer that would actually sell in an international market. Lord knows if I knew of a home brewer that could compete with the bigguns, I'd place bank on an acquisition or try to make partner.
*Keeping that typo.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna pay a little more a brew pot with the spout on it so I can drain it into the primary fermenter without splashing it around. I've read that splashing is a bad thing.
I assume the immersion cooler you speak of is the same thing as a wort chiller? What is the benefit using one of those as opposed to just packing ice around the wort pot until it is chilled just out of curiosity? Does it chill faster?Niode wrote: Personally, I built my own immersion cooler out of copper pipe, it's ugly as sin, but it works well and I can use the water pumped through to sanitise my fermenter!Efficiency!
When I first started brewing I just used a turkey deep fryer kit and the pot that came with it. Those are pretty cheap and maybe a good place to start before you invest in a pot with a spout.
I personally feel the best place to start is to go visit a local homebrew store and/or microbrewery. A lot of these places offer classes and brew with sessions where you can use their equipment and you can see how heavy you want to get into it before you buy. Or a lot of areas have homebrew clubs. And even if you don't do a class or anything the people working there are almost always willing to help with any questions. The majority of homebrewers or even microbeer operators are always happy to help someone serious about getting into the hobby.
I bought a kit similar(maybe one step down) to what you are looking at about ten years ago, did some brewing then got married and started working a ton and then starting having kids. So, I gave the stuff to my newly retired father-in-law and he really took off with it. He's a great frabicator and has been rebuilding cars/motorcycles/whatever his whole life, so he's been able to build some of our equipment as we have learned and developed how to make better beer. We have a keg with the top cut off and a spout on it that he put together for boiling our wort, so we can do up to 15 gallons at a time. He also built a wort chiller(pictured below) out of copper pipping.

The thing is start off slow. Don't go overboard on supplies and think you are going to make the next Heady. Do some research and like I said most brewers are the most helpful people you can find.
As far as the whole whether or not it will taste good subject that came up in this thread . Jim Koch, Sam Calagoine, Larry Bell and many others started their breweries with a 5 gal pot. Most homebrewers don't get into it to make something that tastes like Budweiser or Guiness. They are trying to make something more unique, complex with more flavor and different than traditional brews. So, yes if Bud and Guiness is what you like to drink then I am sure you wouldn't like most homebrews. Which is fine, everyone has different tastes. Just like I don't understand how grown men can like a cartoon geared toward getting my six year old to buy her a new toy. But I don't go into My Little Pony threads knocking it either.
On a related note, here is a picture of a keg of just a standard homemade American IPA I brought to my buddies 4th of July campout. Just a simple IPA with cascade and centintial hops next to a keg of bud light. It was empty way before the bud light. Sure, it was only 5 gal vs. a half barrel, but opened up a lot of minds that weekend.

I more or less just wanted to post a picture of my awesome 5 gal keg cooler.
Re: Beer Homebrewing thread
I brew some awesome root beer. You just can't buy the old fashioned fermented stuff anywhere.

Another brilliant post that contributes to the topic.Niode wrote: Fucking. Word.
I never said "I hate home brews" I said "I haven't had a good home brew yet".
Contribute to the topic, not just say "Bullshit" and "Word."
What have my friends may have done wrong in the process? Was their equipment crappy? Did they not know how to properly brew?

Since when do we talk about homebrews on Racketboy? This is a retro gaming site...
