That's pretty much the same as me. The majority of the games I play on current gen systems are more niche genres or indie games. I do really want to play GTA V though.Gamerforlife wrote:I haven't played an older game in quite a while, but a lot of the newer stuff I play is retro in style and design. For example, I like to play a lot of new 2d side scrollers like Dust: An Elysian Tail or Mark of the Ninja or the upcoming Dragon's Crown. I also will sometimes play re-releases of older games if it's an HD collection or a PSN/XBLA release with achievements/trophies and other perks. I'm interested, for example, in the remastered Ducktales game coming out
Keeping up with newer, non retro games is something I don't concern myself with as I personally find that many of the triple A games that the gaming community rave about every year really aren't all that great, or they are just old ideas recycled for the thousanth time. The Assassin's Creeds, Halos, GTAs, Bioshocks, etc. don't even register on my gaming radar any more. I guess that makes me a hipster![]()
There are some exceptions though. I'm very excited about the new Batman game coming out this year. That's one blockbuster game that may be a day 1 purchase for me
How do you balance your playtime between "retro" & current?

It's funny that you mentioned GTA5. I really thought I lost interest in the GTA games. If I feel like playing GTA I'll just replay 3 or 4, or San Andreas which I own and haven't play yet. But after finding out that GTA5 will be on the PS3 and reading a little about it, I'm pretty interested in it now. Not interested enough to buy it right away, but I'll have to put it on my want list for later.
All these threads, like how do you balance between retro and current or how do you deal with your backlog, etc, I have the same answer. I just play what I feel like. After having such dilemmas like we all do (at least from time to time) I told myself a while back, "Just play what you feel like playing."
Right now I've been on a Wii and 3DS kick, and I haven't played anything retro in a couple of months. I'm not worrying though, eventually I'll get the retro RPG vibe and maybe play through a SNES RPG that's been in my backlog for years. Or get the Sonic itch and play some Sonic games on the Genesis for the thousandth time. Or maybe not. Maybe I'll buy a Wii U and finish the rest of the year playing current games and not touch anything retro until next year.
My point is whatever I feel like playing, THAT'S what I'm gonna play. I don't wanna force myself to play something I'm not in the mood to just because I haven't played retro in a while or I've owned it for X amount of time without having played it yet. The only time I'll force myself to play something is if I'm halfway through a game and get the hankering to play something else. I'll make myself finish it first, otherwise I'll risk never finishing it.
Put simply, yeah, that's what I do too.TheRev wrote:I just play whatever.

I don't leave many games unfinished unless I really just didn't get into it or genuinely thought it was bad. My problem is starting games if anything.

It's simple -- stay a generation or two behind. Like me!
Current? What's that?

I've seriously genuinely considered that, especially when I was getting kind of fed up with modern gaming as a whole. I then looked into more niche games, indie games, rediscovered the joy of Nintendo developed titles, and fell in love with handhelds again. That has sort've rejuvenated my interest in the "now" and has me excited for upcoming titles again. (which, as a result has got me into the current predicament. XD)ExedExes wrote:It's simple -- stay a generation or two behind. Like me!

In a way I kinda did skip over a large chunk of the generation in regards to the Wii and PSP. Didn't get my Wii until Late 2011 and as for my PSP, I got that about a month or so ago.
Oh, well. I guess having too many games to choose from isn't exactly a big problem to have in the grand scheme of things.

I just play what I feel like playing (otherwise it'd be work). This usually ends up being me playing modern games on my backlog rather than retro games on my backlog.
Re: How do you balance your playtime between "retro" & curre
My 2013 games beaten list should answer that:
I do play modern games from time to time, but my interest is still in old(er) games.
