Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, I'd say 95% of people back in to parking spaces. It's a habit I brought with me back to the states. It is so much easier, especially if the parking lot you're in has a lot of foot traffic.

American flags and Americana is a common sight in Japan.
Here is a picture I took inside of a grocery store near Grandma's:

And people say the Japanese* can't drive...

Again, really interesting to see all the USA flags. It's difficult to tell without being in Japan if it's used as a marketing tool, a "welcome to tourists", or something that is common place amongst the world.

*I have a good buddy who is Chinese who always reminds me "No! It's me, the Chinese are the ones who can't drive."

Hmm ok. The Japanese cars I've driven a lot (my current Saabaru and my parent's old Nissan vehicles) had it on the right. Though come to think of it, My Neons had it on the right too. Ok, nevermind, just ignore me.

Yes. The Saab 92x is a rebadged Subaru Impreza. No joke.

American flags are a common sight in Japan. A lot of clothing stores use American flags to advertise that they sell American brands. There is a big clothing chain called "Amerikaya" which sells Japanese-made American-style casual clothing. They always have American flags all over the exterior of their store. They are not alone.

So in the end. American flags are used as marketing tools. The majority of Japanese people think anything American is "cool" so shops and companies use that to their advantage. You will see some restaurants or shops decorated with all American stuff even if they don't serve American food. There really is no deeper meaning behind it other than just advertising. I see confederate flags from time to time as well, but I doubt they know the meaning behind it.

Other than American flags, you see a lot of British, Italian, and French flags...but not nearly as much as Old Glory.

Americans are also the butt of many jokes on nightly comedy shows. It's like how on American TV you sometimes see clips of strange Japanese TV shows. They do the same thing. They show some American TV show or YouTube video and all the comedians afterward make fun of Americans.

Is that show with Beat Takeshi and the retired sumo wrestler still on? The one where they discuss various talk-show-ish social issues and whatnot in front of a foreigner audience? They take non-fluent Japanese language comments from the audience seemingly just to reveal the ignorance of non-Japanese.
