Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are insultingly easy to open - only one screw!

On the coin batteries, the first 2 digits are the diameter and the latter 2 are the thickness. So a 2032 is 2.0 cm across and 3.2 mm thick. Then there are 2052 and 1616 for the other sizes used. Some of the older GB carts you can still fit a larger battery if you're careful so it will last longer. You really want to solder a new tabbed battery in there.

Like others, I have original NES games that still save fine, but I have had newer games come to me that the batteries are toast. Obviously the carts with clocks will use them up faster, but otherwise how the cart was stored affects things too. Carts left in systems for long periods of time might drain them faster due to grounding effects even if the system is off. If the carts are stored somewhere warm or humid that can also kill the batteries faster. Some of us on the forum like myself can replace batteries for you if you don't feel comfortable. You should get the bits to open the carts so you can clean them properly anyway, and then if you have access to a multimeter/voltmeter you can check the batteries to see if they even need attention yourself. The new voltage would be about 3.2, but I wouldn't worry about anything until it gets below 2.5 at the earliest.

Soldering help. (really I should be getting a commission from these guys by now)
