i love collecting originals. but i love to have the HD version for collection as well. i just bought the original NES Mario 1, 2, 3. Then I discovered the WiiWare versions and played them with Wii using Component on a 27 inch CRT and was blown away by the "HD" perfection...If you do not have Wii connected with Component to a late model CRT you will never know how amazing NES and SNES wiiware games look. Its simply mind blowing. For example, Zelda A Link to the Past...I just bought the original and snes console...I played to the dark world on the cartridge. Then I tested the wiiware Snes Zelda and realized the "HD" looked to good to be true, so now I'm re-playing it on the wii because it looks to good...Wiiware games look like HD remakes!!! (with component on CRT, LCD fails!) FYI emulation on wii does not look nearly as good as actual WiiWare games, not even close.
I Love Originals
I Love HD
HD Collection Annoyance
Re: HD Collection Annoyance
Alright, so I've been falling in and out of buying "HD" versions of older games. Sometimes I feel like it's worth it, but other times I feel like I'm wasting my money. It's hard for me to pick a side...
Things like Monster World IV on PSN. Why bother when I can play the fan translation for free? It's a fantastic game, and I wouldn't mind spending the money on it, but I don't want to feel like I'm throwing my money away when I could be buying another game that I don't want to emulate.
Another thing idea I've been tossing around recently is the Wii-U. My girl doesn't like straight up emulation, but doesn't mind the idea of the Wii's Virtual Console quite as much (although she still rather play the games on the original console with a CRT TV). Personally, I rather play the games on my HDTV, as long as they look decent(and not stretched!). So does the Wii VC really make the games look that much better on an HDTV? Is it worth me going out and repurchasing the games just to get the better quality if they do?
I've also been tossing around the idea of dumping all my money into getting my older systems to look great on the big screen. I know it can get quite expensive, and demands a ton of research and even some modding with certain consoles. This makes me feel like it would just be easier to emulate or get something like the Retron 5 for the majority of the systems I play.
I'm a bit of a collector, so I still want to actually OWN the systems, but at the same time I would like to play my games in the best quality possible. Snark and boo at me all you want, but that's how I feel.

Dump a good 500 bucks into an xrgb-mini and rgb scart cables galore!

If you'd asked me a year or two ago if I would've ever considered putting that kind of money down for something like that, I probably would've said you were nuts. Here I am now though, and I'm very happy with my purchase. No more fiddling with dual tv setups and such, now everything looks great through one display.
Honestly, XRGB with scanlines easily gets a nice CRT look.

One of those is on an XRGB-mini, the other is on a Sony BVM. It's really nice, I don't miss gaming through a CRT at all. There's the lightgun thing I guess, but when I'm in the mood for Duck Hunt or something I can always pull out one of the smaller crts I have lying around.
Yeah, I'm kinda bragging a bit, but I do mean it when I say I feel it was worth the money.

It does if you live in Europe where Nintendo removed most 480p/60HZ options from Virtual Console. *Sigh*...

Re: HD Collection Annoyance
everything's gonna be released digitally & "upgraded" eventually; i've recently downsized my collection a lot for this reason. there's not really a point keeping physical copies of things unless you value them from a collecting perspective; so i'd say decide which is more important to you. i typically consider digital versions a good route if you just wanna play the game & have it be convenient more than something to cherish as a collected piece
Re: HD Collection Annoyance
nothing will ever compare to the originals with original console with original crts. as far as collecting and feeling good about it. when my new nes or snes games arrive in the mail i feel great! i collect even though i love playing the "HD" version a lot. what if your traveling and cant take your tv with special connections? i can always take the original console and original game and play on someone elses regular tv! i love knowing i can go anywhere with my snes and super metroid and play it regardless of tv type or available connections. if you have a wii your set with nes, snes, gcube, n64 all in one. i must say the wii is one epic console!!!
