Isn't System Shock 3D? You can climb ladders, look up and down and there's rooms where you have to jump/hover/fly (with jet pack) over gaps and there are noticeable height differences and drops in the levels. Ultima Underworld did looking up and down and full 3D back in 1992.
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

3D rendering, but not 3D architecture. Ultima Underworld's maps are on a single plane, same with System Shock.
Think of it this way; Dark Forces allowed the map designers to create levels where you have a box with a door in it (and now explore the room) and a set of stairs next to the box, and at the top of the stairs you can walk on top of the box. You can't do that in Doom or other early first person games.

Dark Forces was the first to do some neat things in the FPS realm.
Dark Forces isn't from the dark age, they released good Star Wars game during that era (the X-Wing series). The dark age started after 1998. They released Outlaws, Curse of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango during 1997&1998. After that point on they didn't really develop any non lisence games worth mentioning. Between 1984 and 1998 majority of the games they made were original titles. 1999 onwards about 80-90% of the games they made/released were Star Wars games.
Sorry I misread your original comment. As for Dark Forces, Popo nailed the big one. They did a couple other minor things like quasi atmospheric fog. While some earlier games had fog, like Ultima Underworld, it was not atmospheric.

If you count cheating and trickery, I think Marathon beat Dark Forces to the punch. The way Marathon did it was weird, but it could kinda do it.

Yeah, kinda. But I think it's still only regarded as a pseudo-3D effect. Marathon did do freelooking with the mouse before Dark Forces though, but Dark Forces did a lot with its mobility options, including crouching, swimming, running, and so forth. Plus, full voice acting, fog and atmospheric effects, a mixture of open and linear level designs...there was a lot to love in Dark Forces.

I'd argue Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight was pretty damn impressive for its time as well.
And yeah this sucks, along with them cancelling The Clone Wars, as they did Wolverine & X-Men which was really good from what I saw and just about to get even more epic.

Well, The Clone Wars was planned from the beginning to run for five seasons and it did, so at least they were able to tell the whole story they wanted to. Any more seasons would've just been a bonus (and in fact, that's how they're referring to the remaining episodes that are finished but haven't been released yet). And Marvel said that Wolverine And The X-Men wasn't "cancelled", they just couldn't get the funding for season two (this was before Disney bought them, so at that time they had to raise money for each show individually). If they'd been able to get the funding, a second season would've definitely happened. Oh well.
I'm not a glitch, I just have pixlexia.

EA now has rights to Star Wars for making games.
