It's kind of an odd thing really. Naturally light blacks I can't say anything for, but those who get lightened through Photoshop or the like shouldn't do so, as far as I'm concerned. They should be proud of their physical appearance, either way.


Kinda reminds me of a thing that came up 2 or 3 years ago, where there was a push in Scandinavian countries (I think Sweden specifically, but I'm playing it safe right now) for lighter models in advertising, as some people were attempting to tan themselves to Brazilian level skin tones and causing themselves to gain skin cancer and such. Opposite end of the spectrum, but a point.


EDIT: Thought about this just now. At school today this somewhat came up, but in reference to Mexican people. We discussed how we have about 6 people at school, mostly girls, who look Mexican but aren't. (One of them has a sister that could easily be the poster girl for Hitler Youth.) We also discussed my dad, who has an extremely dark tan on his face/arms from being in the sun and such. He commonly gets confused for being Mexican, and people freak out, thinking I'm half Mexican despite them knowing me for years...

Fair skin is a common beauty standard across the world, one strengthened by Euro-centrism (Europe produces and influences the majority of the world's media).

What does that even mean? What constitutes as media? Newspapers, TV channels, radio stations, websites etc? If that's the case, Europe certainly doesn't produce the majority. If we're talking about influence, USA dominates TV&movies (and to certain extent music&fashion) and most internationally popular websites are American.

However, most of the world's population is possessed of brown skin tones of varying shades, which drastically narrows the typical ideal of beauty.

I wouldn't say that's true. On a global scale most people have brown/black eyes and hair, but I'd say that skin tone is divided almost 50/50 on this planet between light and brown/dark. Many asians are very pale, and many middle-eastern&north african muslims and south american people are fairly white too.

Well, it has a bit of a point. The majority of the American ideal about beauty and such comes from Europe, so I think there is a large influence there.
