I don't play enough shmups to comment with any real authority... but I love Compile.

Eh, we are all playing a pretty outdated genre here. Playing shmups at all authorizes your authority imo.

I haven't played enough Toaplan to have an opinion. I didn't love or hate Truxton. And I haven't played Batsugun yet. But I do know that all the Cave games I've played have been ones I've loved.

Brunoafh's blasphemous statement aside, Toaplan does make some real quality stuff. They do stick to a formula for the most part, so all of their games feel very "Toaplan"

I don't think they do shmups even comparable to Cave, but I do think Ikeda's (Of Dodonpachi fame) only works with Toaplan were their best games (V-V/Batsugun), thus proving that Cave is better, even at making Toaplan games :P

I'll give it to Toaplan for being able to make a game that isn't a shmup and make it well.

Batsugun is a masterpiece. It's the daddy of Donpachi and DDP. In fact I think it's better than Donpachi (I think DDP trumps it in gameplay though).

The early Toaplan stuff (pre-Ikeda) has a very different vibe to it. Fast, aimed bullets like Raiden and checkpoints. The spritework and music are amazing. When I think of Toaplan I think of Flying Shark, Twin Cobra, Outzone, Truxton, and Fire Shark more so than V-V or even Batsugun.

Cave has made some absolute classics though. Ketsui, DDP, and DOJ are my favorites by far. I think the Yagawa-Cave games are good, but not as good as the Yagawa-Raizing games (love the spritework and music in Garegga and Batrider).

Alright

I didn't want to be all obvious

Seeing as how "The Name Is The Game"

And nobody has mentioned them yet

In 3 pages of posts

When they made some great early stuff

And even distributed to arcades and consoles games from other devs that we may not have even seen here if it were not for their efforts

May not be so prolific today

But definitely made some classics

You all know who I'm talking about

Capcom.

I had them in my top 5, but then I didn't really want to come up with 5, because then I'd be leaving others out.

They're still being made... en masse too. Just hop on XBOX indie games and see how many are being made....

also get Shoot 1up. But that's another thread...
