Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
Re: Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
Yeah, those badboys are the ultimate authentic experience. ~40 episodes per box, defaults to Japanese language/subs, all original openings/endings/commercial break segments, and they all have books with tons of linear art, "these times in history" and other random cool stuff. The set is also only 7 boxes, compared to the orange bricks which run up to 9 I believe (either way you'd save money buying the orange bricks still, but the awful quality shows lol).
Re: Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
Reviving old thread, because it has come to my attention that DBZ has been released again on blu-ray, and im not talking about the Kai versions (no thanks).
I never did end up getting all the Orange box's, considering finishing off my collection with the blu-ray releases instead, i have seasons 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9 of the Orange box's, such as these:
and the "new" ones are:
Although i wouldnt call them too "new", but Seasons 8 and 9 of the blu-ray series arent out yet.
Anyone ditch their Orange box's for the Blu-ray releases?
Also there is the "Dragon Ball Z: Rock the Dragon Collector's Edition" which i guess was released August 2013, which is episodes 1-53 of the original toonami aired DBZ episodes:
Honestly i dont see how the visual quality could be that much better on the blu-ray version considering its animation (call me crazy) but i bet the sound is hell of alot better. But the Blu-ray releases have 4 discs, as opposed to the orange box's having 6 discs.
Any input is appreciated!

Re: Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
The new BD releases are legit. They still have the cropping (let's remember DBZ was aired in 4:3), but it's handled a lot better and apparently has some pan/scan to confiscate. The menus/commercial break screens which were literally chopped (with text being cut) in the Orange Bricks, they don't have that issue here and looks like they redid some of the art for the breaks and stuff, or moved the logos around.
The Orange Bricks are dirt cheap. I dare you to buy the first set of both and look at the side by side. You might need a barf bag. lol
I wouldn't knock on old anime when it comes to BD releases by the way. There are a lot out there I've seen by now and the BD treatment usually makes old anime look absolutely stunning. Crystal clear masterful quality. Incredible to remember this stuff used to be more intricate and cel drawn.
I'd like to get that Rock the Dragon set for nostalgia sake haha.
I hope you don't mean Orange Bricks vs the new BD release here... it's an embarrassment how bad the orange bricks look, seriously everything is totally washy and looks like pure garbage. The new BD release looks 100x better, I got the first set and might go with it instead of the Dragon Boxes whenever I rewatch it. I can get over the cropping, otherwise the BD release is just about on par with the Dragon Boxes but a bit more crystal clear. They look damn good, I'm definitely planning on buying them all when I have the money. And yeah the sound is good. BUT, I don't know if it has the American music... if you care about that. I'm not sure.Honestly i dont see how the visual quality could be that much better on the blu-ray version considering its animation (call me crazy) but i bet the sound is hell of alot better. Just want to echo the feeling that the new blu ray releases are exceptional. I've been picking them up as they've been released (the schedule has been snappy, thankfully) and season 7 just came out two days ago.
Also, they do indeed include both the american and japanese music.
The sets are definitely worth the money, especially since Amazon has consistently sold them at a discount since day one.
Edit:
Also want to agree that blu ray does great things for old animation, provided they take the time to make a good release.
If you like Yu Yu Hakusho, for instance, check out the blu rays for that series. Absolutely gorgeous.

Yeah I think the best part about these new BD sets is how affordable they've become. Looks like $20 a set which is awesome. Can't wait to get them.
Re: Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
Ended up ordering Season 4 Blu-ray box, cant wait to watch!
Where do you get $20, the average seems to be $25 on Amazon, which some sets being as high as $40, as far as the new Blu-ray releases go.Xeogred wrote:Yeah I think the best part about these new BD sets is how affordable they've become. Looks like $20 a set which is awesome. Can't wait to get them.

Guess I just glanced at the first boxset or 2's prices.
2 is really cheap. But yeah I think they fluctuate a lot. Hopefully this is Funimations replacement for the Orange Bricks though and will be very easy to get for years and cheap.

I own all the orange box seasons. Got them at BestBuy for $25 each. One big ass purchase to get them all at once. I enjoy having the whole set.

Re: Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
Geez. I didn't know the price exploded on these. I have the first Dragon Box and it looks like I need to sell it and get a nice chunk of the blu rays.
Re: Dragon Ball Z DVD/Blu-ray Box sets and such....
this has been an informative read. i've always wondered what the definitive versions of DBZ were, and now i think i have a better idea of what to get once i decide to finally splurge on them again. i had a few of the orange boxes back in the day and i liked them, but upgrading to blu-ray would be nice. thanks!
