Since the pack in controllers are red, maybe they will make a matching red classic controller pro. If so I would pick one up instantly, as it would go great with my normal red wii. It might be possible because the red wii I have was a limited edition for Mario's 25th anniversary, while this is not.

Vertical is great - such a space saver in my cabinet.

Primarily my line of thinking with it as well. Component has managed to hang out where S-Video largely hasn't, but it'd probably be the next to go, particularly on the budget-minded displays that this would probably be paired with.

It doesn't make it HD, but it makes it convenient going forward. I'd think if they did it, they could still integrate something that would do 1080p upscaling as well (like many later DVD players do), primarily for convenience.

But, given that they seem to have stripped out WiFi, probably not the direction they went

A red classic controller was bundled in with some copies of Xenoblade Chronicles in Europe, so that is also an option.

I don't think the orientation makes much of a difference unless you're like, rotating the console while a disc is spinning inside.

It's probably more of a case of the Wii and Wii U not sitting vertically very well without a stand, and Nintendo wanting to save a few pennies by not including one.

1) They stripped out unnecessary things, like the console stand, to make the Wii cheaper.

B) The Deluxe WiiU comes with a console stand.

This looks really awesome as far as system revisions go, a neat design. I was talking about this with a friend last night. For $99.99 I'd probably buy one to never open. If they package it with a game like Wii Sports/Resort like the 129.99 Wii recently (they better!) I'd buy one for my parents for Christmas.

Thank You, that does make sense! Not including the vertical stand multiplied by all the consoles; less set of parts and less packaging.

Interesting, so maybe the reader is okay either position? I know the older Wii verticals have a bad reputation of dual layer disc read errors, but maybe that was because the readers were improved and the problem was not the console position? I replaced the laser inside my reader and keeping it vertical, time will tell if it holds up.

"mummy I want the new Wii for xmas" Mummy now has 5 possible options for this... Which one does she pick when she doesn't really have much of a clue which the 'right' model is?

As far as the multiple SKUS, I think its the same as the special edition themed releases on other systems. The gaming market is huge, so maybe all the models can be absorbed in sales. I think eventually that mini Wii would expand from Canada and take over as the only Wii console later on; an entry level Nintendo. Even though online is dropped, at least this extends the life of Wii game support for new releases. It does seem like an in house competition cutting into Nintendo's own total sales of consoles. Maybe they are playing it safe by keeping the Wii active in the short term in case the Wii U sales are not enough?

Ya know, the multiple SKUs thing is true. I wasn't agreeing at first, but after thinking about it, yeah. I haven't had the opportunity to buy myself a 3DS yet, and I decided I want to get the XL. I remember thinking to myself, "Oh no! What if some one decided to get me a 3DS for Christmas because they know I've been wanting one but it's not the XL like I wanted?" I had the same thought about the Wii U. Of course I'd prefer the Deluxe version! But what if some one got me the basic set as a gift?

I'd be happy either way, to be honest!

I know for SURE that my parents would only notice that one Wii U is black and one is white. They'd have no idea about the difference between them. Maybe the 3DS XL is a little more apparent of a difference. But I guess I'm basing my opinion from what I know about my parents. I'm in my mid 20's, my parents their mid 50's. They're from a much different generation. I'm guessing a parent that's 25-35 years of age would be more in tune with the technology these days, and know what 8 versus 32 GB means. I mean, I'm 25. I have cousins that are in their 30's, and there as in tune with today's tech as I am.

So, maybe having multiple versions of the same console isn't that big of a deal. Sure, my parents wouldn't know the difference. But my parents are also past the age of getting a Christmas list from me. My point is, the average age of today's parent, that would be buying video games for their children, will probably know a little something about a little something.

I like the look of the Mini, and no GC support was expected, but no Internet support means no access to the Wiiware and Virtual Console games. I already have a Wii, but that announcement makes me worried that the Wii Shop Channel will close down sooner rather than later. I have most of the good ones (the Konami Rebirth titles, Kyotokei, Star Soldier R, some other stuff) already bought, but now I want to grab the rest I've been eyeing...

And knowing Nintendo they won't even have any Closing Down-sale with everything marked down when the time comes. Just a small, barely noticeable announcement how they're shutting down the service.

No access to WiiWare means no need for additional memory. Maybe the console doesn't have as much memory as a regular Wii, and maybe it's missing the SD card slot. More ways to make the console at a cheaper price.
