I only know the simplest of things like a system restore, or installing new RAM.
No shame in that. Just ask for help at that point. Nobody you know that could have been bribed with a meal or a beer to take a look? Or you could have asked here.

Even if somehow the machine itself only had a 90 day warranty or something and the HD really was toast, it should have had a year warranty from the original manufacturer. I haven't owned a premade system in a really long time, but I really can't imagine any name brand one having less than a year warranty.

Less than a year, which is why I was so frustrated.
The system restore did work, for about 2 minutes. Then it all started crashing again. Icons and programs completely disappearing. Not enough resources to launch the control panel even, the 2nd time around. Which is what led me to believe the hard drive was hurt.

I'm sure it did. I would have been glad to use it...if my wife hadn't cleaned out our file cabinet two weeks before. It caused a little bit of an argument as I was going through our paperwork. This time I put the receipt and paperwork away in my own safe place, and I purchased the Best Buy extended warranty.
I guess I just find it kinda baffling that you don't seem to have any interest in even learning any of the simple stuff you could use to take care of your own computer issues in the future.

Do you find it baffling when people don't know how to repair their car or fix their cooling system, too?

I'd be baffled if someone bought a new car because they thought the transmission was dead when really it was just a belt that needed replaced. Investigate, then decide how to proceed...

The only place in my town for computer repair is Best Buy. They cost an arm and a leg for repairs and the computer was only $300 and some change. Either the repair or a new computer was going on my Best Buy card, either way. And as I've said, I don't trust myself to do any repairs on a computer because I don't have the know-how.

this. What you're kind of saying Burning is if your car didn't start tomorrow, you'd just buy a new one cuz you're not a car-guy. It could just need a new battery though, y'know?
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I'm just inviting that in the future if you have computer issues post a thread here (assuming you have access to another computer?) and ask if anyone can help you. It could be something easy/cheap to fix. There's a lot of folks here (not me) who know a lot about PC's and repairing them -- some do it for a living. They might be able to save you a trip to Best Buy and several hundred dollars if it's something simple and you just don't realize it.
Might do that in the future. But even if I had thought of that and somebody here did know that, I still wouldn't have a computer to connect to Racketboy in this case.

Trust me, if you can install new RAM you can install a new HDD. The only issue is reinstalling Windows and acquiring the disk to do so. That honestly would have fixed your problem. Hell I could have mailed you a disk. I have a degree in Computer Science and work as a Network and Server Administrator, so feel free to message me with any PC issues you have and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Next time don't jump the gun, find a different PC, message me or start a help thread and we will help you without having to spend so much money. Hell, you might even learn a thing or two along the way.
