No doubt, even if you're not in trouble, just bomb beginning on the 2nd boss, if you don't, you'll regret it. Tough to do this of course, but I wish I could convince myself.

That's good advice. Far too often I get there thinking I can handle it without bombing...and am usually wrong. Even when successful, I seem to do just as well either way. So might as well bomb to cut the stress.

I also shouldn't try so hard at coin-chaining either after stage 1. It's too distracting and not really worth the effort...yet.

The Gemheads however are worth it. And after some searching, I found the old screenshots showing where to be to activate them in the 1st 4 stages:

Finally gave this game some love, and it schooled me pretty hardcore for a while. Was agonizingly close to making it to the fourth stage, but I made some pretty devastating mistakes with the bomb and close attack buttons against the kabuki mech boss.

Out of curiosity, am I the only one who gets massive slowdown through the better part of the 'winter' and 'summer' stages?

No slowdown on PCB or DC version, not sure about MAME.

Yeah, those screenshots are very nice to have, thanks for that!

So want to join in on this, but I have a lot of work ahead of me to get my DC up and running again.

Ha! Awesome.

I'm trying to do something with a monitor, some speakers, and the scaler I bought from you, just haven't had time to tinker...

Your DC copy has slowdown? Is it bad? Weird...a legit game, not a burn or anything, right? Sucks.
