I like that most of the arcade ports for 16 bit consoles ended up more like console arrange modes, so they are fun to play even when you have them in MAME.

I'm not the shooter nut like some of you, so I have to admit, I was only talking about the graphics, not gameplay...

I remember playing this game a lot on my Mega Drive.

Some time later I watched a clip of the arcade version on YouTube.

It looked so much better...

Ha ha yeah, the Genesis ports of their games all look so cartoony, and the colors just aren't there.

But in the arcade version your ship doesn't change colors!

I LOVE Hellfire! When I first had the MD years ago it was quite hard to get, but I had an Asian machine so tracked it down, then played it constantly until I beat it! I can still remember all the music all the way through! Can't wait to get into that again... ;)

Hellfire is a great. nail-biting Toa shooter, and a really respectable conversion on the Genesis/Mega Drive. I think that can really be said about most of the Toaplan ports on the system. (For some more than others, of course.)
I think the only thing really setting Twin Hawk back is a few missing enemies, and bullet patterns. It's only slightly worse, in terms of accuracy, than Truxton from what I can tell.
They all pretty much look considerably better in their original arcade architecture, but as far as 16-bit arcade conversions go, I think the Toa offerings on the Genesis/Mega Drive are pretty damn good.

Also, I realized that I left out Fire Shark from the list of Toaplan shooters, and obviously, I forgot about Eliminate Down.
There are still a number of shooters for the system that I left out. They just might not be as worthy of your time and money, but maybe worth a look anyway.
