Chrono Trigger is more timeless for me. Pun intended.

FF4 has my favourite story between 4, 5 & 6. Cecil's story is simply more relatable than Terra's I guess.
Yeah but VI was more than just Terra's story. I think VI split the main protagonist role amongst several characters.

Definitely FF6 for me. I just loved the way that world was built. It was also pretty cool that the world was destroyed halfway through the game! The whole Esper plotline was a bit of a mess, but FF6 had so many great moments. The opening, the opera, the escape from the floating continent, whoo. Chrono Trigger was pretty charming but I can't remember anything as awesome as that.

Secret of Mana at least needs to be on the poll as a dark horse option.

I don't think many fantasy stories are THAT relatable

Though I too think FF6 is like FF13 (brrrr, yes I know I just compared the series's masterpiece to the series's ......toiler produce), and there really isn't just one protagonist, but all of them (almost) have equal importance. You just start out as Tera. I think Celes has a bigger part in the story. No, that isn't right. Come to think of it ALL the characters (except the bonus ones) get character development, their own dramatic scenes, and side quest storylines. I love that game ^_^.

Anyway, if you played the game a long time ago perhaps you should try it out again :).

Actually I should try out Chrono Trigger too, I haven't replayed it in over 8 years....hm....DS port anyone?

The DS port is the SNES game with some bonus dungeons, including a bonus boss which ties things in better with Chrono Cross, and it also includes the ending cinematic from the PS1 game. So I'd call it the definitive version.

Anyways I was pretty serious about my Secret of Mana comment. I've accepted that I like it and SD3 more than even these two top dogs and other fan favorite JRPG's. Story wise it could certainly be debatable since it's not the Mana games' strong point, but yeah SoM/SD3 are just so much damn fun with so much charm and heart put into them. They're probably right after Link to the Past and Super Metroid for me in SNES games I've replayed the most.

With these two, I feel like I should pick Chrono Trigger because sci-fi always wins in my book, and although Uematsu and Mitsuda worked together on the music, I think Mitsuda was the main force behind it or his influence shows the most... and I tend to like him even more than Uematsu. CT's music is insanely good, too bad Mitsuda didn't do more back on the SNES. I love how Xenogears has a similar sound though.

But I think FFVI is more consistent and interesting. And I'd easily say FFVI's cast is better with more development than CT's characters. CT has some weird game design moments where the gameplay is kind of broken up into weird parts, some tedious dungeons or trial and error puzzles, you lose your stuff (I always hate this so much in games), and just some weird things like that... never liked Alya and her time either (outside of the big dungeon towards the end of that portion, that place is fun). It's like I'd say... CT has higher peaks of awesomeness than FFVI to me, but I think FFVI is more consistent throughout and so I might lean more towards it here.

Still both probably on my top 10 JRPG's list, but yeah.
