I tried the shirt trick but that didn't work (no dirt on it). The "pull up slightly" thing isn't it either. Any ideas what to do>
What I usually do is take a toothbrush dipped in rubbing alcohol and scrub the dickens out of it. That usually frees up any bits of grime in there and sweeps away the loose bits. Also keep in mind that the cart connector on the original SNES is removable so you can try reseating it if all else fails.

One thing I have had luck with doing in situations where the console slot is dirty is get a cartridge, get a q-tip really really soaking wet with alcohol, get the cartridge contacts as wet with it as possible, then quickly insert and remove it multiple times. This is basically using the cartridge as a slot cleaner and has worked well for me.

Thanks, I'll try both. I'll get a cheap toothbrush on the way home.

Do yourself a favor and pick up these games and give them a try whether you think you will like them or not: F-Zero, Starfox, Super Mario All Stars, that last one is about 4 or 5 platformers in one! You will be amazed how much fun these games are!!

I'm trying to get SMA but local prices are a rip off (most places want $20 for just the cart). I already have F-Zero (great game), and idk if I can get into Starfox after being spoiled with modern 3D, lol. If I come across it locally i'll snag it for sure, but i'm most likely not going to go out of my way to find it.

Also, I was able to get my hands on one of those nintendo appoved original cleaning kits for the system/carts. Worked quite nicely (and it was odd that it was boxed and unused and I only paid $4).

It's actually alright. The only issue is using a D-pad to move instead of an analogue stick makes it a bit jerky.
