http://www.racketboy.com/retro/microsof ... al-consoleBy the end of its life the Xbox cost $149 in the US, and between 2001 and 2005 Microsoft had reported a nearly $4 billion loss selling them.

Dreamcast was a nice name and it fit the original design and M.O. of the console itself.
Megadrive fit the PAL and Japanese markets rather well.
Wii was a marketing gamble that paid off big time, doesn't make it any less silly.
But in all honesty most console names are highly unoriginal and nothing fancier than your stereotypical engineer could come up with.. the Xbox takes the crown for being the dullest yet.
One more thing.. who cares about console semantics? Is anyone really flustered if I call it 0Xbox?

It's intresting how the original Xbox can be run with Linux or FreeBSD as it's operating system
Yet it lost in sales to PS2. I doubt they made up 4 billion just by selling overpriced DVD remotes and headsets. Or did users have to pay for Xbox live on the Original Xbox too? I got mine after the whole service had already been shut down so I dont knowMrPopo wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_leader

The point of the system was to get the brand out there and get people familiar with it.Menegrothx wrote:It's intresting how the original Xbox can be run with Linux or FreeBSD as it's operating systemYet it lost in sales to PS2. oXbox is really just an abbreviation for it on the forums, I doubt a lot of folks walk into their local game shop and actually say, "where are your oh-xbox games/accessories?".
Re: Why people call Xbox "oXbox" here?
Precisely. Microsoft had the cash reserves to take a large loss on the Xbox to do better the next generation and the generation after that.AppleQueso wrote:The point of the system was to get the brand out there and get people familiar with it.Menegrothx wrote:It's intresting how the original Xbox can be run with Linux or FreeBSD as it's operating systemYet it lost in sales to PS2.
