Not saying we should hate anyone but "hipster" must have a different meaning in Australia. Here there are "hipsters" who buy retro games not because they like playing them but because it shows how cool they are, they also do the same for vinyl. Now there are probably plenty of so called hipsters who actually like the stuff, but for a lot of them its just a trend.
Is "hipster" the new "scene" or did they just change the name of it?
It's the same thing... I think.

I don't know, I don't think anyone can actually agree on what a hipster is. Hipsters also refuse to call themselves hipsters.

Haha I know, trends are so confusing. But hey, a crazy person wouldn't call themselves crazy either. :P

I've never had luck finding games I'd want in yard sales. I've seen 2600 stuff, but I don't really want a 2600. I've also seen some of those "plug & play" games from time to time, but that's about it. The only other games I'll occasionally see are things for little-little kids, like Dora the Explorer or Shrek games. I've never seen a yard sale with someone getting rid of Sega Saturn games or something awesome like that. Still, I'll regularly stop at yard sales and see if there's anything interesting.

I know there are some members of this forum who have giant game collections and have almost certainly not played all their games. What makes the collector respectable and the hipster worthy of disdain?

I've found that most of my nerdy characteristics have somehow become hipster qualities over the years. Playing old video games? What a hipster. Listening to unpopular/obscure music? Come on, if you don't like what's popular, it must be because you're a hipster. Unfashionable clothing? Hipster city. Drinking beer from microbreweries? WUDDA SNOB! Facial hair? Only allowable for the trendy!

I think the big difference between an ubernerd and a hipster is one gets invited to more parties. I guess that's what mostly separates me from the hipster stereotype?

My theory on that:

That's because what's "cool" now is what was considered "not cool" back in the day. Which I think results from people constantly grasping for something "new" to follow. Because if there were no trends and followers/non-followers, then there would be no way to determine who's "better" than everyone else.

The passion is the difference. Most of the collectors here have passion for video games even if they don't play everyone they own. Now just buying retro games because your friends are doing it or it is deemed "cool" to is entirely different, but hopefully they will play them and come to actually love them like all of us do. But I must reiterate that not all "hipsters" are like this and I am sure there are plenty who actually do love retro gaming.

I don't see why we can't already use the existing system of whoever makes the most money wins.

Thats a good hipster then, a good hipster never accepts the title no matter what, the best way to spot a poser is by hearing the person call itself is a hipster.

Maybe it'll get so bad and prices will raise so high that we can all sell our collections and retire early. I'm ok with that.

Then what would we do with all our free time.

Anyway, back on topic. I think garage sale finds are only gonna get harder to find. You can only pick over the same areas so long before they seem to dry up.
